City Description:
Takayama is a city in Japan's mountainous Gifu Prefecture. The narrow streets of its Sanmachi Suji historic district are lined with wooden merchants’ houses dating to the Edo Period, along with many small museums. The city is famed for its biannual Takayama Festival, going back to at least the mid-1600s, celebrating spring and fall with parades featuring
Weather and Events:
Takayama sees a steady stream of visitors Apr–Nov, with peak travel periods being May (especially the series of public holidays known as Golden Week, late Apr–early May) and Aug–Oct. The climate is humid continental, with hot summers and cold, snowy winters. The longstanding Takayama Festival, consisting of a Spring Festival (Apr) and an Autumn Festival (Oct), is widely attended and known for its elaborate parade floats with marionette displays.
