Elli-Kaija Köngäs-Maranda was an internationally renowned anthropologist and feminist folklorist. She studied Finnish language and folklore at the University of Helsinki, where she received her B.A. in 1954 and her M.A. in 1955. She continued her studies in United States and did her doctoral dissertation in 1963 at Indiana University. She was a lecturer at Columbia University and a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute of Harvard University. Köngäs-Maranda was elected a Fellow of the American Folklore Society. The Society's Women's section inaugurated 1983 two prizes in her memory.

    Levi is a fell located in Finnish Lapland, and the largest ski resort in Finland. The resort is located in Kittilä municipality and is served by Kittilä Airport and Kolari railway station. At a latitude of 67.8° north, it is located approximately 170 km north of the Arctic Circle. The peak of the Levi fell is at an elevation of 531 metres above sea level. There are 43 ski slopes and 27 ski lifts in Levi. Ascending the fell are 2 gondolas, 1 chairlift, 14 T-bar lifts, 5 stick lifts, 4 rope tows, and 1 magic carpet for children.     Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park is the third-largest national park in Finland, covering 1,020 square kilometres . It is located in the Lapland region, in the municipalities of Enontekiö, Kittilä, Kolari and Muonio. It was established in 2005, when Pallas-Ounastunturi National Park was joined with Ylläs-Aakenus Protected Area. Fell chain across the National Park is almost 100 kilometres long. The highest fell Taivaskero 807 metres masl is located in middle, in Pallas area. The high fells of the park are the southernmost place to see some arctic species in Finland. Most of the park consists of primeval forests and various types of muskeg.
