PARIS Vacation 2018: DAY 1-2 La Marais | Museums | Latin Quarter
Where's the Paris Food???
Week long Paris vacation in April 2018! First day was partial travel day, so we ended up settling into our AirBnB in the La Marais district and walked between this neighborhood and Latin Quarter (right across the Seine River).
Second day was the 1st full day in Paris! We bought a museum pass & hit up a few good places (L'Orangerie, Notre Dame, & Sainte-Chapelle)
Weather was unseasonably warm during most of our stay, 80F-90F in April! Really nice to be close to the Seine River where many Parisians hang out with friends all day & night long!
Paris, France: Sainte-Chapelle's Dazzling Interior
The best original Gothic stained glass is found in the Sainte-Chapelle church in Paris. Step inside and be overwhelmed by the dazzling light-filled interior. Its architectural harmony is due to the fact that it was completed in only six years — unheard of in medieval times (nearby Notre-Dame took over 200 years!). We're confident our travel video guide covered some of the top attractions in Paris along with some suggestions that wouldn't necessarily be found in a tourism guide book including information on festivals, arts, entertainment and dining along with French cuisine. Most of the French foods we sampled would be found at any kind of local French bakery (pâtisserie).
50 Things to do in Paris, France | Top Attractions Travel Guide Travel Video Transcript:
Hello, and welcome to Paris. This week we are exploring the city of love, city of lights and city of art. This video will be showing you the top 50 things to do while you visit Paris.
So we're wrapping things up here. What would be your one tip for visiting Paris? Well, I have recently spent a whole ten days here in summer. I would say that if you really want to visit the art galleries, the museums and all of the main attractions you should probably avoid summer and like either come in the spring or the fall or even winter. Because the lines are insane and sometimes you have to wait like an hour and a half or two hours.
So how about you? What are your final thoughts on Paris? So my finals thoughts is obviously Paris is one of the top cities in the world in terms of attractions. There is going to be garbage, there is going to be lines, there is going to be some areas that are a bit of an eyesore. But there is also a lot of beauty and there is also a lot to do here.
And that concludes our guide of the top 50 things to do and see in Paris. We hope you enjoyed watching, and let us know if there are other places you would add to this list.
This is part of our Travel in France series showcasing French culture, French arts, French foods & French cuisine.

Paris, France: Monet's Dreamy Water Lilies
Step out of the leafy, sun-dappled Impressionist painting that is the Tuileries Garden and into the Orangerie, a little jewel box of a museum featuring works by Monet, Renoir, Matisse, Picasso, and others. The main attraction, Monet's Water Lilies float dreamily in oval-shaped rooms he designed to showcase his masterpiece. Subscribe at for weekly updates on more European destinations.

The Sainte-Chapelle is a royal chapel in the Gothic style, within the medieval Palais de la Cité, the residence of the Kings of France until the 14th century, on the Île de la Cité in the heart of Paris, France.
Begun some time after 1238 and consecrated on 26 April 1248, the Sainte-Chapelle is considered among the highest achievements of the Rayonnant period of Gothic architecture.
It was commissioned by King Louis IX of France to house his collection of Passion relics, including Christ's Crown of Thorns - one of the most important relics in medieval Christendom.
Along with the Conciergerie, the Sainte-Chapelle is one of the earliest surviving buildings of the Capetian royal palace on the Île de la Cité.
The contemporary visitor entering the courtyard of the Royal Palace would have been met by the sight of a grand ceremonial staircase to their right and the north flank and eastern apse of the Sainte-Chapelle to their left.
The chapel exterior shows many of the typical characteristics of Rayonnant architecture - deep buttresses surmounted by pinnacles, crocketted gables around the roof-line and vast windows subdivided by bar tracery.
The internal division into upper and lower chapels is clearly marked on the outside by a string-course, the lower walls pierced by smaller windows with a distinctive spherical triangle shape.
The Parisian palatine chapel, built to house a reliquary, was itself like a precious reliquary turned inside out.
The quatrefoils of the dado arcade were painted with scenes of saints and martyrs and inset with painted and gilded glass, emulating Limoges enamels, while rich textiles hangings added to the richness of the interior.
Above the dado level, mounted on the clustered shafts that separate the great windows, are 12 larger-than-life-sized sculpted stone figures representing the 12 Apostles (six of these are replicas - the damaged originals are now in the Musée du Moyen Age).
The most famous features of the chapel, among the finest of their type in the world, are the great stained glass windows, for whose benefit the stone wall surface is reduced to little more than a delicate framework.
Fifteen huge mid-13th-century windows fill the nave and apse, while a large rose window with Flamboyant tracery dominates the western wall.
Although damaged during the French Revolution, and restored in the 19th century, it has one of the most extensive 13th-century stained glass collections anywhere in the world.

Ile Saint-Louis in Paris France
The Ile Saint-Louis in The Marais neighborhood in Paris, France.
The Marais literally means 'marsh' and that is exactly what this Parisian neighborhood was 1,000 years ago, writes Abby Gordon, an American expat and freelance writer based in Paris.
Before the area was drained into a fertile marshland, it was a swamp, and unfortunately the swamp-like odors remained centuries after the transformation. Narrow cobblestoned streets, exposed stone and beamed-buildings and slanted walls and rooflines are prevalent, a testament to the Marais's medieval history.
Today, the Marais is one of Paris's most trendy and desirable neighborhoods. It is the hub of the gay community in Paris. The Marais is also home to so many restaurants, cafes, and boutiques, many of which stay open on Sundays, an unusual phenomenon in France. Despite this modernization, the Marais still retains so much of the medieval character that was bulldozed in the 19th and 20th centuries for bigger and better structures in other parts of the City of Light—but not the medieval smell. Thankfully, the most prevalent smell these days emanates from the numerous seductive boulangeries (bakeries) and pâtisseries (pastry shops).
