CANAL SAINT-MARTIN | Paris, France (Paris in Spring)
Canal Saint-Martin, Paris France. Take a glimpse at the Canal Saint-Martin in Paris France during Spring. The Canal Saint-Martin is a 4.6 km (2.86 mi) long canal in Paris, connecting the Canal de l'Ourcq to the river Seine. Over nearly half its length (2069 m), between the Rue du Faubourg du Temple and the Place de la Bastille, was covered in the mid-19th century to create wide boulevards and public spaces on the surface. The canal is drained and cleaned every 10–15 years, and it is always a source of fascination for Parisians to discover curiosities and even some treasures among the hundreds of tonnes of discarded objects.

A Walk Down Canal Saint-Martin, Paris
The Canal Saint-Martin is a 4.6 km (2.86 mi) long canal in Paris, connecting the Canal de l'Ourcq to the river Seine. Over nearly half its length, between the Rue du Faubourg du Temple and the Place de la Bastille, was covered in the mid-19th century to create wide boulevards and public spaces on the surface. The canal is drained and cleaned every 10–15 years, and it is always a source of fascination for Parisians to discover curiosities and even some treasures among the hundreds of tonnes of discarded objects.
Construction of the canal was ordered by Napoleon I in 1802, in order to create an artificial waterway for supplying Paris with fresh water. The water diverted from the river Ourcq would support a growing population and help avoid diseases such as dysentery and cholera, while also supplying fountains and allowing the streets to be cleaned.
Gaspard de Chabrol, prefect of Paris, proposed building a canal from the river Ourcq, starting 100 km northeast of Paris. The canal was dug from 1802 to 1825, funded by a new tax on wine. The canal was also used to supply Paris with food (grain), building materials and other goods, carried on canal boats. Two ports were created on the canal in Paris to unload the boats: Port de l'Arsenal and the Bassin de la Villette.
By the 1960s, traffic had dwindled to a trickle and the canal narrowly escaped being filled in and paved over for a highway.
Today, the canal is a popular destination for Parisians and tourists. Some take cruises on the canal in passenger boats. Others watch the barges and other boats navigate the series of locks and pass under the attractive cast-iron footbridges. There are many popular restaurants and bars along the open part of the canal, which is also popular with students.

Parc Monceau, Paris, France
The Parc Monceau is one of the most beautiful parks in Paris—which is saying a lot, considering that Paris parks in general tend to be beautiful. It's a large park on the northwest side of the city, popular with the well-to-do Parisians who live in the area. It is notable for its follies: fake ruins and monuments intended to bring to mind exotic places. It also has places for kids to play, and vast spaces in which to relax. It even has Wi-Fi. This video shows some of the highlights of the park.
Principal photography was completed in early October, 2012.

Walking Around Les Halles
A quarter-hour stroll around the area of the Forum and Les Halles in Paris, France. The actual Forum is being rebuilt and will be a construction zone for the next few years, but I visit the surrounding neighborhood, including the Place Beaubourg in front of the Pompidou Center, the various streets in the area, and so on. A few street performers are included, as well as the Quartier de l'Horloge. A nice visit to a very busy area—even on a weekday, when this was filmed.

Making money in Paris
Cour du Commerce Saint André, Paris, France
A very quick visit to the Cour du Commerce Saint André, a tiny, pedestrian street in the Latin Quarter of Paris that is hundreds of years old. The video shows the street itself and some of the businesses (mostly restaurants) on the street, including the rear façade of the Procope, the oldest café in Paris.
This video is edited a bit more briskly than most of my videos, with shorter captions. I'm not that happy with it, but it will have to do until I can come up with something better for the Cour du Commerce.
