Places to see in ( Le Touquet-Paris Plage - France )
Le Touquet is a small seaside town in northern France. It’s known for its wide beach, a water sports hub, and for its lively nightlife, which includes clubs and casinos. Phare Le Touquet is a red-brick lighthouse with far-reaching views of the sea and countryside. The Musée du Touquet displays modern and contemporary art, plus works by regional artists. Fresh produce is on offer at the art deco–style Covered Market.
Le Touquet has a reputation as the most elegant holiday resort of northern France, the playground of rich Parisians, with many luxury hotels. Hôtel Barrière Le Westminster, Le Touquet, France.
Since the mid-1990s, Le Touquet’s villas have become extremely fashionable amongst architecture lovers throughout Europe, rediscovering the “folie” of seaside architecture of both the Roaring Twenties and the 1930s. The most famous local architect is Louis Quetelart.
Hippolyte de Villemessant (1812–1879), founder and owner of the Paris newspaper, Le Figaro. At the time it was an area of wild sand dunes and forest - part of a hunting estate. Its name came from a Picard word meaning ‘corner’, and was originally applied to the area of coast nearby. It became known as “Paris by the sea”, and strict building regulations encouraged the most talented architects to create imaginative and innovative developments.
In 1902 Allen Stoneham and John Whitley bought the land, through their company Le Touquet Syndicate Ltd, and were instrumental in developing the town into a golf and gambling resort. In 1909, H. G. Wells and Amber Reeves fled to Le Touquet in an abortive elopement. The two returned to Britain after a number of weeks, though Amber later gave birth to Wells's daughter, Anna-Jane Blanco White, after the relationship ended.
During most of World War I Le Touquet was home of the Duchess of Westminster's (No 1 British Red Cross Society) Hospital for wounded British troops. The #2 Canadian Stationary Hospital had the distinction of being the first Canadian Unit to land on French soil. No. 2 Stationary opened at the Hotel du Golf at Le Touquet on November 27, 1914. All the 142 British Commonwealth war graves in Le Touquet's Communal Cemetery in Avenue de 18 Jun are from the hospitals. The graves occupy a plot by the cemetery entrance. (The cemetery also contains French and Italian war graves.) In the same cemetery a wooden obelisk was erected by the commune's lifeboatmen in honour of the British.

Northern France Road Trip (Le Touquet + Amiens + Montreuil-sur-mer) • Emma Rose Daniels
Last month we travelled to France on a road trip for a few days. We stayed in Le Touquet (my favourite place in Northern France) and visited Amiens, Abbeville and Montreuil-sur-mer. We didn't need to travel far from Calais for a quintessentially French holiday!
I feel quite lucky to live in the south east of England, which means travelling to France is quite easy and only an hour or so away! France is also a country I love to travel in, so I hope that comes through in my video.

Northern France: The Unexplored Frontier
Northern France is just a hop across the English Channel and gateway from Britain to the continent. But despite thousands of travellers who pass through the busy channel ports, Nord-Pas-de-Calais remains unspoiled by tourists and largely unexplored. The region originally belonged to the Countship of Flanders as did Belgium and retains much of its Flemish flavour -- evident in its beautiful architecture. We explore the vibrant cities of Lille and Boulogne, tour beautiful cathedrals, drift the canals, visit Montreuil where Victor Hugo wrote part of Les Miserables, and in Arras, pay homage to the thousands of soldiers who lost their lives to war.
