Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is a national park located in Maranhão state in northeastern Brazil, just east of the Baía de São José. Protected on June 2, 1981, the 155,000 ha park includes 70 km of coastline, and an interior composed of rolling sand dunes. During the rainy season, the valleys among the dunes fill with freshwater lagoons, prevented from draining due to the impermeable rock beneath. The park is home to a range of species, including four listed as endangered, and has become a popular destination for ecotourists.

Chapada Diamantina is a region of Bahia state, in the Northeast of Brazil. This same chain receives other names, like Serra do Espinhaço, in Minas Gerais, and Borborema, in Pernambuco and Paraíba. The Chapada Diamantina is at the center of Bahia state, in the Northeast of Brazil. It is the northern zone of the Espinhaço Range, has approximately 38,000 km2 and encompasses 58 municipalities. Technically it is considered part of the caatinga biome, and is the highest area in this biome, almost all of it over 500 metres of altitude. The vegetation, always conditioned by the physiographic conditions, is represented by the cerrado, rocky fields, forests and caatinga, all of them harbouring great biodiversity and endemisms. The best of Brazil Uncovered | Lagoon Bonita Tour in Lençois Maranhenses with AVA TOURISM

The photos that we took on these tours in the North east of Brazil were some of the most impressive from our Latin American journeys. The sites were unbelievable and I can't recommend our guides enough.

Our tours left from Barreirinhas and this area is super safe unlike most places in Brazil. To get to this destination you must get a plain to Sao luis and then take a 5 hour bus which is easy to find and leaves every hour from the bus terminal if you want to be economical. Alternatively, you can book a private transfer which will cost considerably more. I was told about 300 reales, which is in the region of £75 at the current exchange.
