Luquillo is a municipality of Puerto Rico located in the northeast coast, northwest of Fajardo; and east of Rio Grande. Luquillo is spread over 5 wards and Luquillo Pueblo . It is part of the Fajardo Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city of Luquillo is 26 square miles and it sits on 12 miles of Atlantic coastline. It is nestled between the blue waters of the Atlantic and the El Yunque National Forest, a rainforest, giving it a diverse and unique ecology. Luquillo marks the beginning of the Northeast Ecological Corridor Nature Reserve which runs down the coast from Luquillo’s town square all the way down to the Seven Seas Beach in Fajardo. Breathtaking Playa Mar Chiquita, Puerto Rico

Mar Chiquita is one of the more popular natural pool beaches just 45 minutes west from San Juan on the north coast. This picture-perfect cove, located in the town of Manatí, is not always good for swimming, but it is always beautiful.

The water in this natural pool is crystal clear, constantly being refreshed with every wave that pushes from the ocean through the channel in the rocks.

While the waters are calmer during the summer months, winter turns this into a spectacular sight to be seen. Waves crash against the rock wall going up as high as 25 feet, rushing down like fierce waterfalls. The water rushes in through the channel with fury, giving beach goers a great wave.

Because of the shape of the cove and the narrow area between the rocks where water comes in and goes out, there can be serious undertows. It is possible to get sucked out into the open ocean when the water flows back out of the cove. There are no lifeguards on duty, so beware of the sometimes dangerous swimming conditions.

Planning a Trip to Puerto Rico

Here's some advice on planning a trip to Puerto Rico! One tip- it’s kind of long, so if you go to the settings and change playback speed to 1.5 or 2, you’ll get the same experience, only faster!

We’ve been living here for almost a year now- but it’s not been a normal year. I was gone last summer and then we were gone a few months after the hurricane, so we’ve not got to see all the things we wanted to yet. We continue to explore more!
