Travel Colorado - Visiting Mesa Verde National Park
Take a tour of Mesa Verde in Colorado, United States -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Southwestern Colorado serves as the backdrop for Mesa Verde, one of the great windows into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people.
Meaning green table, Mesa Verde was first discovered by Spanish explorers moving west to California.
However, it wasn't until the late 19th century that the famous cliff dwellings, like the Cliff Palace, were discovered.
The cliff dwellings, built under rocky outcroppings and in caves, were home to the natives for hundreds of years.
Hard sandstone and adobe were the main building materials for these houses.
Though much of the ruins are well-preserved, much vandalism and theft took place in the early years of the area's discovery.
To protect this piece of history, Mesa Verde was named a U.S. National Park in 1906, and is a National Historic Landmark today.
Exploring Colorado's national parks
Belgian-born photographer Johan Lolos has always dreamed of visiting Colorado, and having the opportunity to travel with his girlfriend, Delphine, was a “dream come true.” On their journey through the state, they toured Colorado’s four national parks and one of its national monuments, snapping pictures the entire way.
They started in the mountains between Estes Park and Grand Lake at Rocky Mountain National Park. The park is surrounded by 14,000-foot peaks and is thick with evergreens, wildlife, rivers, and streams.
Next they visited the deep canyons and the surreal starry skies of Colorado National Monument. They toured the 53-mile stretch of Black Canyon National Park by plane, and the ancient cliff-dwellings of Mesa Verde National Park on foot. They ended their journey in southern Colorado at Great Sand Dunes National Park, which contains a 30-square-mile dune field with the tallest sand dunes in the United States.
Amazed by the diverse landscapes, Johan says, “Colorado will stay in my mind for a long time.”

Rocky Mountain (USA) National Park Travel Guide
Travel video about destination Rocky Mountain in The USA.
No other mountains in the United States of America conjure up the myths and legends of the Wild West than do the Rocky Mountains. The Rocky Mountains National Park contains only a small area of North America’s mighty, thousand kilometre long mountain range. It is located in Colorado and rightly deserves its reputation as being one of the greatest natural paradises in the U.S.A.In late spring the vast ocean of flowers that cloaks the meadows is in stark contrast to the snow covered mountain peaks. In the deeper regions the landscape is mostly covered by dense forests that are dominated by many varieties of pine tree. Powerful forces are always at work creating new scenes of natural splendour and in spring time after the snow has melted the creeks are transformed into mighty torrents of water. The combination of high mountains, dense forest, crystal clear lakes, wild rivers and idyllic valleys gives this region a unique atmosphere. The Rocky Mountains National Park is beyond doubt one of the most spectacular and outstanding areas of natural beauty anywhere in the world.

Mesa Verde National Park is a U.S. National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Montezuma County, Colorado, United States. It is the largest archaeological preserve in the United States.[3] The park was created in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt to protect some of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in the world, or as he said, preserve the works of man. It is the only cultural National Park set aside by the National Park System.[4] It occupies 81.4 square miles (211 km2) near the Four Corners and features numerous ruins of homes and villages built by the Ancient Pueblo peoples, sometimes called the Anasazi. There are over 4000 archaeological sites and over 600 cliff dwellings of the Pueblo people at the site.
The Anasazi inhabited Mesa Verde between 600 to 1300, though there is evidence they left before the start of the 15th century. They were mainly subsistence farmers, growing crops on nearby mesas. Their primary crop was corn, the major part of their diet. Men were also hunters, which further increased their food supply. The women of the Anasazi are famous for their elegant basket weaving. Anasazi pottery is as famous as their baskets; their artifacts are highly prized. The Anasazi kept no written records.
By the year 750 the people were building mesa-top villages made of adobe. In the late 1190s they began to build the cliff dwellings for which Mesa Verde is famous.
Mesa Verde is best known for cliff dwellings, which are structures built within caves and under outcroppings in cliffs — including Cliff Palace, thought to be the largest cliff dwelling in North America. The Spanish term Mesa Verde translates into English as green table. It is considered to contain some of the most notable and best preserved archaeological sites, More Info
