Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island, turns into a paradise of flowers in spring and summer. After the harsh winter, plant life erupts in all its brilliant glory. It's a wonderful place to discover gardens.
The 250-kilometer highway from Asahikawa to Obihiro passes close to eight notable gardens. That is why it has come to be called the Hokkaido Garden Path. Each garden has its own individual character, setting, and vegetation.
Anthony Wood is a photographer from the United States who has lived in Japan for 10 years. His home state, Minnesota, has vast and abundant nature, much like Hokkaido. At the beginning of this trip, Anthony focuses his camera mostly on the beautiful flowers in full bloom. But as his journey continues and he meets the people behind the gardens, he trains his lens more on them.
On this edition of Journeys in Japan, Anthony embarks on a road trip through the far north of Japan, in search of beauty.
Ueno Farm Ueno Farm People come from all over Japan to visit this garden created by Sayuki Ueno, one of the most popular gardeners in the country.

Tokachi Millennium Forest Tokachi Millennium Forest This dynamic garden was created by British designer Dan Pearson, who found inspiration in the surrounding mountains and hills. The section known as the Earth Garden was carefully calculated to fit the undulations of the surrounding hills.

Tokachi Hills Tokachi Hills The theme of this garden is food. The main plants here and the beans of Tokachi, alongside vegetables, cereal crops, fruit, herbs, and edible flowers. Besides being beautiful to look at, it also boasts a delicious restaurant. Hungarian chef Victor Moldován prepares dishes using fresh ingredients that he picks each day from the garden.

Shichiku Garden Shichiku Garden The owner of this garden, Akiyo Shichiku, devoted herself to this project after her husband died. Her aim was to create a scenery of fields full of wild flowers, just like she remembers from when she was a child. After more than 20 years of constant effort, the result is this beautiful garden.

Lake Shikaribetsu This is highest-altitude lake in Hokkaido. Visitors can take part in a range of outdoor activities, including canoeing.

Daisetsu Mori-no Garden
This garden, produced by Sayuki Ueno (of Ueno Garden), has been created by using many different flowers that embody Hokkaido.

Rokka-no Mori Rokka-no Mori This landscape-type garden was opened by a long established Hokkaido-based confectionery maker, Rokkatei. The aim was to create a scenery inspired by the designs of wild flowers and plants on the wrapping paper that the company has used since the old days.

Kid’s shows are supposed to be the source of innocence, creativity, and an overall positive influence on the young mind’s that are watching them. But sometimes, writers can go a little too far and an artistic or creative decision may be the tipping point whether the censors will allow the episode to air. Or, sometimes these episodes will bypass the FCC, only to be ill-received by kids and parents, causing the episode to be pulled after exposure. It seems that society’s most important rule is to first and foremost protect the children and avoid any sort of content that may shatter their innocence. These days, parents rely on the television too much to do their job for them and get upset when their child sees something that they weren’t ready for.
This video will be discussion the banned episodes of various children’s series. What is interesting is the fact that people will have differing opinions on what should be banned and what should have remained on the air. Some networks eventually changed their mind and allowed the shows to go on the air after some time had passed and the controversy was over. You’ll be surprised on what qualified an episode to get banned. In an age where Disney can sneak in images of naked women, the reasons some of these shows were banned seem extraordinarily trivial. From worrying about offending certain cultures to having too many flashing lights, the criteria for banishment is pretty small and can be interpreted for nearly every episode. It’s a wonder that children even have stuff to watch anymore that has any quality.
Parents seems to not give their kids enough credit in their ability to handle certain topics shown on television. Like in Australia a few years ago when the county’s public broadcasting network banned an episode of Peppa Pig, whose main characters befriended a spider. Because Australia seemed to think their children were completely stupid, and the country housed some of the most venomous spiders in the world, the broadcasting company thought it best to yank the episode.
Bugs Bunny has had his share of controversy, which led to three episodes being banned for being offensive. Two episodes had Japanese and German caricatures that were deemed too offensive to be seen called, “Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips” and “Herr Meets Hare.” There is even one episode where the Bunny puts on blackface and joins a minstrel show, which really pushes the envelope of the time.
Sometimes episodes were banned if they originally featured a celebrity who was now put on the shame list. In the show, “Arthur”, which aired on public broadcasting networks, there was an episode called, “Room to Ride” that featured former Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong. However, after the athlete admitted to using steroids to get his wins, the episode was pulled and banned. There are no signs of the episode returning anytime soon.

目的の先住民の集落へ向かう途中に
銃で襲撃された一行でしたが
この模様、テレ朝のコンプライアンス的には
放送して大丈夫だったのでしょうか？
コンプライアンス担当の上司、
甲斐さんからは実は…
「友寄く～ん！！
こんなの危なすぎて放送出来ないよ～！…etc」
とのご指摘が。このままだとお蔵入りに…。
このピンチ、破天荒のナスDはどう切り抜けて
オンエアにこぎつけたのか？

アマゾン突入SP⑤ 9～12日目。
ジャングルを歩くこと4日、
ようやく目的の集落に到着し
1週間の取材許可を頂いた一行。
山奥で暮らす先住民は何を食べ、
どんな生活を送っているのか？
今回は先住民の「食」を中心にお届けしますが…
放送作家三浦の今回の見所は17分9秒～、
「うまいから食ってくれよ」と
勧められたナナフシをナスDが頂くシーン。
実はこれ、現地では全く食べられていない代物。
あくまで現地の方の冗談だったのです。
現地スタッフがさすがに信じないだろうと
おちょくっただけなのに、
ナスは誰も止める間もなく
一口で食べてます(笑)
勧めた張本人もドン引き、
あまりに衝撃的過ぎて印象に残りました。
更にこのシーンでは僭越ながら三浦が
「声の出演」をさせて頂いております。
噛みまくって10回以上撮り直しました(笑)
お聞き頂ければ幸いです。
因みに…皆様から頂くコメントにて
ほんのごく少数「三浦のファン」と
言ってくれる方を発見。
そこでどうでもいい僕の情報ですが…
現在30歳、独身彼女なし。
この現状にナスが「あそこ良いらしいよ」と
僕と巨漢ディレクターに勧めてきたのは
ナス自身は一度も行ったことない「相席屋」。
早速私と巨漢ディレクターで行って参りましたが
「チェンジ」が続き、成功率は0％。
帰ると待ち構えていたナスが
「どうだった？どうだった？」と
根掘り葉掘りメチャクチャ聞いてきました。
そして…最後は何故か
エルトン･ジョンの「Your Song」を
何度も熱唱し僕らを慰め、
歌い疲れたのかそのまま寝てしまいました。
何なんだこの人は(笑)と思いつつも、
気づけば寒空の夜、
ベランダで1人「Your Song」を
口ずさんでしまう三浦なのでした…。
話は脱線しましたが…

一行は道中、
ジャングルでのクリスマスを迎えます。
いきなりですが皆様へ
ここでナスDからの出題です。
Ｑ.南米アマゾンで文明から
離れた生活を送る先住民達には、
クリスマスという認識はあるのでしょうか？
答えは…
Ａ.宣教師がキリスト教普及のため
積極的にジャングルに入り
先住民に布教を行ったので
12月25日がクリスマスだという事は
ほとんどの先住民が知っていると思われます。
都市から近い集落に住む先住民たちは
街まで降りてクリスマスを祝う事もあります。
実はこの道中もジャングル奥地に住んでいるが
クリスマスのお祝いをするために
街へと向かう先住民の一家とすれ違いました。
その方々は銃を持ち、狩りをしながら街へ。
獲った獲物や果物を食料にし、
10日間ほどかけ街まで降り
残った獲物は売りそのお金を
宿代やお酒代にして楽しみ
クリスマスを過ごすそうです。
しかし…その家族とすれ違ったのは「12月26日」
ナスＤは「日付を勘違いしているのでは？」
と思ったそうですが…
実はその予想は違っていたのです！
