Castle of Penela is located in a Penela town in Penela Municipality in Coimbra District, Portugal. The castle was built on a hill dominating the area and used to be a stronghold protecting Coimbra in times of Reconquista. Castle of Penela and the neighboring castle Montemor-o-Velho are both fine examples of defensive structures of that period. The origins of the name are controversial and are attributed by some authors to ancient Celtic tribes. According to a local legend, King Afonso I exclaimed to incite his troops storming the stronghold: Coragem! Já estamos com o pé nela! . A more plausible hypothesis is, however, that penela is a diminutive of penha, a place selected to build a fortress on.

Originally a 12th-century Templar stronghold, when the order was dissolved in the 14th century the Portuguese branch was turned into the Knights of the Order of Christ, that later supported Portugal's maritime discoveries of the 15th century. The convent and castle complex is a historic and cultural monument and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983.

The Monastery of Batalha , literally the Monastery of the Battle, is a Dominican convent in the municipality of Batalha, in the district of Leiria, in the Centro Region of Portugal. Originally, and officially known, as the Monastery of Saint Mary of the Victory , it was erected in commemoration of the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota, and would serve as the burial church of the 15th-Century Aviz dynasty of Portuguese royalty. It is one of the best and original examples of Late Gothic architecture in Portugal, intermingled with the Manueline style.

Dot (bless her cotton socks) from Portugal Friends, had organised a walk and lunch at Tomar. Unfortunately, Christine, who had scouted the walk initially had hurt her foot so couldn't tell us which way to go at the end, so we had the opportunity, on our return, to see the bits we had had missed on the outward trek. It was an enjoyable walk and the rain held off until the end.
After the walk, we enjoyed an excellent lunch at The Smokehouse where, after the delicious barbecue meal, they introduced us to their own rocket fuel.
