Pescosansonesco is a comune and town in the province of Pescara in the Abruzzo region of Italy. It is 500 metres above sea level in the natural park known as the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. Famous for its sanctuary, the village is divided into two parts: the old suburb, Pescosansonesco Vecchio, and the new village, Pescosansonesco Nuovo, which was rebuilt some 3 kilometres away, in the “Ambrosian” region. The vecchio borough of Pescosansonesco was abandoned in 1944 due to numerous landslides caused by a series of earthquakes.     Rocca Calascio is a mountaintop fortress or rocca in the Province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo, Italy. At an elevation of 1,460 metres , Rocca Calascio is the highest fortress in the Apennines. Built of stone and masonry exclusively for military purposes and intended only to accommodate troops and never as residence for nobles, the fortress overlooks the Plain of Navelli at one of the highest points in the ancient Barony of Carapelle. Construction of the fortress started in the tenth century as a single watchtower. A walled courtyard with four cylindrical towers at the corners around a taller inner tower was added in the thirteenth century.
