Porec (Croatia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Porec in Croatia.
Poreć is picturesquely situated on a peninsula in the north of Croatia‘s Istrian coast. At first glance it appears to be a typical holiday paradise visited by thousands of tourists each year but its Town Hall offers a hint of its historic past, the traditional style of Venetian Renaissance. In 1267, Poreć, as Istria’s first city, was affiliated to the Serenissima and with the subsequent construction of palaces, squares and religious buildings, it soon took on a Venetian appearance which has remained until the present day. The harbour’s traditional buildings date back to the time of the fall of Venice and when the city came under Austrian rule. In Roman times the Old Town had an efficient road network. Poreć’s main street, Decumanus, divides various groups of buildings of dominant Gothic design. In 539 A.D. the city came under the rule of the Byzantines who founded a bishopric there in around about 800 A.D.Between 539 A.D. and 553 A.D. Bishop Euphrasius had a basilica built on the foundations of several earlier buildings, an Early Byzantine masterpiece and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Poreć is a little gem with a great history and culture and even now, Pearl Of The Adriatic!

Our visit Pula travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide to pizza, top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting castles, forts churches, the old town, roman ruins, theatres, beaches and along the marina. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Pula tourism brochure, Pula itinerary or Pula, Croatia city tour also known as Pola.
10 Things to do in Pula, Croatia Travel Guide Video Transcript: (Pola)
Pula was our first introduction to Croatia and what a way to start! Located on the Istrian peninsula, this seaside town is home to Roman ruins, ancient temples, and some delicious pizza. The town won us over right from day one, so in this video, we’re going to take you on a tour of Pula and show you some of the highlights:
The amphitheatre was built during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, at the same time the Colosseum in Rome was going up. What’s even more shocking is how well preserved it is; this is the only remaining Roman amphitheatre with all four side towers and three stories still standing.
As a travel tip, if you visit during the summer months, you can catch numerous events at the amphitheatre, including concerts, movie screenings, and even reenactments of games from Ancient Rome.
When it comes to boat tours, the most popular destination is , a group of small islands that sit out on the Adriatic Sea.
The islands have a few archaeological and cultural sites but though admission to the park used to be free, these days you have to join one of the official excursions arranged by the park or local tourist agencies.
As for Pula Cathedral, it turns out it was closed when we tried to visit, so we can only show you the outside.
After all that wandering around town, it was finally time for lunch. We arrived at Jupiter Pizzeria just as they were opening and didn’t waste any time grabbing a seat on their outdoor terrace.
The fortress we spotted turned out to be Pula Castle, also known as Kaštel. Located atop a hill right in the centre of Pula, this fortress was built by the Venetians during the 17th century.
Admission was 20 kuna per person and there were two different museums exhibits to visit, however, we’d argue that the main draw are the views.
Over the course of the centuries, the Temple of Augustus has seen many uses from a Christian church to a grain storehouse, but at present, it houses a very small 1-room museum – and when we say small, we mean you can visit in 5 minutes!
The Roman Mosaic is just a short walk from the Forum, so it’s worth the little detour down back streets. This incredible well-preserved floor depicts the Punishment of Dirce, which is straight out of Greek mythology.

Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Vrsar, a romantic, sunny and typical Mediterranean settlement that used to
be a finishing village and still is, but tourism has become increasingly significant.
Vrsar with only 1600 residents was also a fishing village once. It's a romantic sun kissed characteristic settlement of the Adriatic. The city wall can only be seen in parts today, some sections of it were built in the façade of the houses in the course of development. From the harbor, steep medieval streets lead up to the old town where a wonderful view opens up to the large rocks remaining from the old stone mine, the harbor, the islands. From here, we can best see the countless islands of various sizes. Among which, there are rocky and grassy, inhabited and uninhabited but for sunbathers and swimmers arriving by boat, all are equally lovely. The crown of the old town is the church with its Venetian style tower built in the 12th century. Behind it, there's the holiday home of the bishops of Porec.
Porec is an intimate city abundant in monuments with a great history and significant tourism. Open air market is held all season long on the promenade where street musicians and puppeteers entertain the vacationers in the evenings. The renaissance towers standing behind the port and the arcade building of the city hall are from Venetian times. The old town shows a unified image in spite of the fact that besides Venetian style buildings, we can find a number of gothic, baroque and renaissance houses.
The basilica, part of the UNESCO world heritage named after St. Euphrasia was built on the foundation of a paleo Christian prayer house. In the 5th century, it was developed into a three knave basilica. It was made world famous primarily by its Byzantine mosaics. The three knaves of the basilica are separated by Corinthian pillars. Its center dominated by the open atrium. The mosaic of the walls of the sanctuary depict scenes from the life of St. Maurus and the floor of the remains of the mosaics of the old basilica can be found. The wall of the atrium is decorated with embossments and carvings. The frescoes and paintings are from the early middle ages.
The roads running across the peninsula follow the line of Roman roads. Parts of these still incorporate the stones in these old roads, worn and smooth as glass. On the coast of the Adriatic, abundant in fish, seafood is tremendously popular. The small -- fried in oil, the somewhat bigger sardines and tasty mackerels are popular. The most common preparation method is roasting over coals or grilling. Meat is prepared similarly. --, -- and --. The typical side dish is a pepper sauce mixed with onion called ivar.
