FINDING AND LOSING MADRE NATURA | Mountain biking in Finale Ligure Ep. 2: how to find trails

Welcome back to my second episode of the Finale Ligure mini series: this time it’s all about finding your trails around Finale Ligure because that’s a bit tricky at times as you will see in this video…

And that down there is Finale Ligure. From there we have taken the shuttle up to here. And now we’re trying to find the Madre Natura trail or something like and going down there. But from our previous experiences with blue trails here that might also already be a challenge. But I don’t want to go the Base NATO trail which is a black one, so we’re trying our luck on this one.

Are you ready to get properly lost now?

Talking about getting lost: in the bike shops you can get a paper map of all the trails in Finale Ligure but still you gotta be able to read a map of course. They also provide GPX tracks, but it’s still kind of hard to do the research with only this map. Then there’s trailforks, but of course it shows only the downhill trails and only partially the uphill access roads, so you gotta figure that out yourself. Or you’re just trying to find the „standard“-trails like Rollercoaster, Base Nato etc via any other source - but then you’ll be missing out on a lot of the good stuff!

So, what I wanted to mention is that when you take a guide here or a shuttle-service, the first thing that they do is the Base NATO trail. It’s a black diamond. They do it to check how good the people are and they decide which other trails to take. But since I know that I’m not having fun on a black diamond, we’re just taking the blue one instead.

So it actually seems like we lost the Madre Natura and now we’re going up on this… I don’t know, is it even a fireroad, to where hopefully the part 2 of the Madre Natura starts.

Alright, so it seems like we’re back on the Madre Natura. We have in fact been taking the Sentiero H at the end. That’s why it was so challenging. Matter of fact, it’s easy to lose the trails here. And, eh, all the trails are not marked here. Some of them are of course, like during another tour that we took, the 24h-of-Finale-Ligure, that was marked.

So as the guys down in the bike shop mentioned is that the big problem in Finale is that most of the trails are not marked. So you have to take a guide in order to maximize your time spent here. Otherwise, you will always spend some time searching trails, trying to find out what the best trails are and so on… woah!
