Annecy, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France - Venice of the Alps
Annecy is the largest city of Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in southeastern France. It is an alpine town, where the River Thiou meets Lac d’Annecy. It lies on the northern tip of Lake Annecy, 35 kilometers south of Geneva. It’s known for its Vieille Ville (old town), with cobbled streets, winding canals and pastel-colored houses. Overlooking the city, the medieval Château d’Annecy, once home to the counts of Geneva, contains a museum with regional artifacts such as Alpine furniture and religious art, plus a natural history exhibit.
Nicknamed the Pearl of French Alps in Raoul Blanchard's monograph describing its location between lake and mountains, the city controls the northern entrance to the lake gorge.
Switching from counts of Geneva’s dwelling in the 13th century, to counts of Savoy’s in the 14th century, the city became the capital of the Savoy province in 1434 during the prerogative of Genevois-Nemours until 1659. Its role increased in 1536, during the Calvinist Reformation of Geneva, while the bishop took refuge in Annecy. St Francis de Sales gave Annecy its role of advanced citadel of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. The annexation of Savoy will link the city to France in 1860.
Sometimes called Venice of the Alps, this idyllic and touristic representation comes from its two canals and the Thiou river lying through the old city and whose initial role was to protect the city and to empower its handicrafts. The city experienced an industrial development in the 19th century with silk manufacturing. Some of its industrial legacy remains today within the head offices of NTN-SNR bearings, Salomon, Entremont and Dassault Aviation.
Since the end of the 19th century, Annecy has developed as a tourist center with the proximity of the lake, winter resorts and the renovation of its castle, inaugurated with the opening of its fine art museum in 1956. The municipal environmental policy managed to keep 40.3% of green spaces and the city and was awarded the Golden Flower in 2015, given to the nine most-flowered French cities. Since 1960 Annecy has been the organiser of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, hosted at the Bonlieu Cultural Centre. It has also been a growing educational center since the establishment of the University of Savoy in 1973.

Annecy is an alpine town in southeastern France, where Lake Annecy feeds into the Thiou River.
Reclining gracefully by the shores of its mountain-fringed lake, cut by limpid canals, studded with geranium-bedecked houses, and dominated by its turreted château, Annecy is one of the ornaments of Savoie. Made great by the medieval Counts of Geneva, augmented by the Dukes of Savoy, it's kept much of its stunning vieille ville (old town), despite being capital of the modern département of Haute-Savoie. The purity of the lake and the beauty of its setting compels Annéciens outdoors – in good weather it seems everyone is hanging out in pavement cafes, mountain-gazing along the lakefront, swimming in the lake, or just aimlessly cycling around it.
Annecy in the North of the French Alps, is called touristically the Venice of Savoie. The medieval town centre built around a 14th Century Chateau is dissected by small canals and streams running out of Lac Annecy, which is clean, fresh and a wonderful azure colour. Annecy is also the prefecture of the département of Haute-Savoie.

Places to see in ( Annecy - France ) Lac d'Annecy
Places to see in ( Annecy - France ) Lac d'Annecy
Lake Annecy, in the Haute-Savoie region of France, is fed by mountain springs and known for its clean water. At its north end, Annecy has a medieval old town with canals and bridges. The 13th-century Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard perches above the lakeside village of Menthon-Saint-Bernard. The town of Saint-Jorioz has a popular beach. There are trails around the shore and pleasure boats dot the lake in summer.
Until the 1950s, the lake collected wastewater from towns and villages bordering it. The large influx of these rich and dirty waters resulted in the significant development of algae and an inevitable smothering of the lake. This eutrophication, frequent with economic and industrial development, threatened the survival of the lake. Lake Bourget and Lac Léman found themselves in similar situations.
Several pioneers, including Paul Servettaz, sounded the alarm and 8 townships joined forces to create the SILA on July 15, 1957. The Syndicat intercommunal of Lake Annecy decided to set up a safety belt around the lake in the form of wastewater collectors along the banks and redirecting to the treatment plants the result of their harvest. This very simple mechanism prevents the dirty water from spilling into the lake. And in fact, since that date, only rain and spring water feed Lake Annecy. Thus Lake Annecy has become one of the first French sites to make sustainable development (without knowing it).
Lake Annecy is one of the purest in Europe. From the shores of the lake to the turquoise waters so dear to Cézanne via the Tournette, the Roc de Chère or the Semnoz, the enchanting landscapes are waiting for you.
North of the lake, the old town of Annecy and its multiple channels can be discovered in all seasons. On the left bank, Sevrier, Saint-Jorioz, or Duingt and his castle live on the edge of the water. On the right bank, Veyrier and its belvedere, Menthon Saint Bernard and its castle dominate the lake. At the end of the lake, the nature reserve and belvedere of the rock of Chère then a few kilometers, the sources of Lake Annecy in Faverges complete this tour of the lake.

Places to see in ( Annecy - France ) Gorges du Fier
Places to see in ( Annecy - France ) Gorges du Fier
The Fier is one of the most important rivers in the Haute-Savoie region. Just 10 km from Annecy, the river has carved out one of the most magnificent examples of erosion by running water, the Gorges du Fier, considered to be one of the natural wonders of the Alps. The Fier gorges are a remarkable natural curiosity of France , in Haute-Savoie : a very deep and narrow gorge that can be visited through a gateway attached to the rock face, arranged in the middle of the xix th century . This gorge was cut by the mighty Fier torrent in the town of Lovagny some 11 kilometers west of Annecy.
They are classified among the greatest natural curiosities of the French Alps and are accessible to the public by a footbridge of 300 meters length suspended 25 meters above the torrent. Along the way, you can admire giant's pots , the big fault, the sea of rocks and the fairy rock. Seen from a certain angle, some places of the rock walls draw faces by paréidolie . Several marks engraved in the rock indicate the heights reached by the river during different floods .
Tumultuous mountain torrent, the Fier meanders from Mount Charvin where it takes its source through Thône s then Annecy until jumping into the Rhone not far from Seyssel. It is about ten kilometers from Annecy , in Lovagny that he dug an impressive canyon. Resulting from the thousand-year erosion of water on the rock, the Fier runs a narrow passage between two steep walls 27 meters high. Unprecedented in the Northern Alps (but similar to the Gorges du Verdon), the Gorges du Fier is a pleasant and accessible family visit that takes place half on secure bridges 25 meters above the bed of the torrent. A mid-point scale shows the record dates and heights of the different floods.
Quick walk of less than one hour existing since 1869, the visitors will overhang the rocks tortured by the spirited water, will see giant's cooking pots as well as the play of shadows and lights on the stone. The walk ends when the gorge widens on the sea of rocks, maze of rocks lapiaz or the water sneaks before resuming its original form of torrent.

ANNECY — LA VENISE SAVOYARDE | 4K Timelaps
That was the first French city that I visited in my life. Seeing Annecy, you fall in love with him momently. This city on the shores of a magical lake in the summer turns into a paradise. Annecy can be visited at least for the color of the water of the lake! The walks on the mountain paths near the lake, the paragliders with a dizzying view, the best ice cream of France, the burgers with Savoyard cheese that you will remember for a long time, a boat trip or a ship with dinner, the famous fireworks... When you see Annecy, nobody remains indifferent! And I spent here 5 months on an internship, having lunch every day on the shores of the lake or in the nice restaurants... Must have!
