Travel ideas: the North of Portugal, Aveiro, the Portuguese Venice
Subscribe to the channel
Located on the shore of the #Atlantic #Ocean, #Aveiro is an industrial city with an important seaport.
The seat of the municipality is the city of Aveiro, comprising the five urban parishes with about 73,003 inhabitants. The city of Aveiro is also the capital of the District of Aveiro, and the largest city in the Baixo Vouga intermunicipal community subregion.
Aveiro is known as The #Portuguese #Venice, due to its system of canals and boats similar to the Italian city of Venice. The people's quality of life is very high.
Aveiro, Portugal, is perhaps one of the country’s most unique and inspiring cities, and yet it remains a “hidden gem” that features on surprisingly few travel itineraries for visitors planning their trip to the western flank of the Iberian Peninsula.
No visit to Aveiro, Portugal, would be complete without taking the time to explore the expansive lagoon and canals that weave their way around and through the city.
There is something about a city set amongst water that adds a certain charm and magic, and Aveiro is no exception. Indeed, Aveiro has been hailed as the Venice of Portugal for its pretty maritime setting.
Aveiro canals criss-cross the centre, radiating from Praça Humberto Delgado in the very heart of the city and stretching out to the Atlantic Ocean waiting beyond. Aveiro canals and the lagoon have been the centre of its industry and economy for hundreds of years, and simply taking the time to wander along their banks is like taking a journey through history.
with a mixture of grand buildings and former fishermen’s houses, the canals are a festival of colour, with brightly coloured paintwork and attractive ‘azulejo’ panels for which Portugal is renowned. However, it is the bobbing fishing boats, or ‘moliceiros’ as they are known locally, which really bring the Aveiro canals to life.
Moliceiros were traditionally used to harvest seaweed, although they are more commonly used these days for tourist activity, and hopping in one to take a tour round the city from the water’s perspective is the perfect way of whiling away an hour or two during your stay.
There are in fact many different styles of boat which are used to navigate the waters surrounding Aveiro, but the moliceiros are the most popular and are best associated with the city.
The moliceiros are shaped long and narrow, with a styled bow and stern which are often highly decorated, with ornate images demonstrating tongue-in-cheek humour about everyday situations. They are usually made of pine and around 15 metres long and some two-and-a-half metres wide, with a covered forecastle. They are propelled by the use of a long stick or, on the narrower canals, via a towpath cable.
The ornate decoration of the moliceiros is at odds with the workaday usage for which they were originally designed. Despite their sumptuous looks, they were once the vessel of choice for harvesting seaweed from the lagoon waters surrounding the city.
The seaweed was the main source of fertiliser for use on the farmland that surrounded the city, ensuring that it played a vital rule in Aveiro’s agricultural economy. The low-edged design was perfect for gathering seaweed and the long, shallow body was ideal for navigating through low waters.
There are many moliceiro tours to choose from, of similar price and quality. Try taking a tour at the end of the day so you can admire the sunset over the waters and leave with lasting good memories of your stay.
Nazare - Portugal HD
The Nazaré beach, with a mild climate and natural beauty, has the oldest traditions of Portugal linked to the fishing arts.
The long, crescent-shaped beach, which is also the seafront of the city, is known for its grandeur and brightly colored awnings that decorate the white sand beach in contrast to the blue of the water.
This is the beach of Portugal where the traditions of fishing are more colorful and it is not uncommon to cross with the fishmongers who still wear the seven skirts, as tradition says. On a late Saturday afternoon in the summer months, it is essential to sit on the wall watching the interesting spectacle of Arte Xávega, where fish nets arrive from the sea and the women shout their trading sessions. If we do not exactly understand the words, it's nothing to worry about. These are codes that often only they know.
Facing the sea, on the right side, we see an impressive promontory. It is the Site, where we have one of the most known panoramic views of the Portuguese coast. There are 318 meters of rock falling steeply to the sea, which is reached on foot, for the most courageous, or climbing the elevator. At the top, we find the little Hermitage of Memory, where we can tell the legend of the miracle that Our Lady made preventing the horse of a nobleman, D. Fuas Roupinho, from launching on the cliff. True or not, in the Mirador de Suberco we can see the sign left on the rock by the horseshoe on this foggy morning of 1182. In the Sítio, we can still visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré and not far away, the Dr. Joaquim Manso Museum To learn more about the Nazarene traditions.
From the Sítio and with time for a walk, crossing Pedralva Park, you come to Pederneira, a natural lookout point with a must see on the coast of Nazaré.
Nowadays, the great attraction of this city is the waves and the surf, thanks to the Canção da Nazaré, a submarine geomorphological phenomenon that allows the formation of giant and perfect waves. It is the largest submerged gorge in Europe, with about 170 kilometers along the coast, which is 5000 meters deep.
Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara gave him world-wide visibility when in 2011 he made the world's largest sand-bottom wave, about 30 meters long, at Praia do Norte, winning the Billabong XXL Global BigWave Awards and setting a record Of the Guinness Book. Similarly, surfers from all over the world visit Nazareth every year to venture into the sea. On the beach, sunbathing is also appreciated and an excellent audience to appreciate the feats of these young people.
To get to know Nazaré you do not need a relaxed stroll through the narrow streets, perpendicular to the beach, and a break in one of the restaurants to enjoy a plate of fresh seafood, grilled fish or an appetizing stew. And at dusk, nothing like enjoying the setting sun on any terrace overlooking the sea, as the lights come on and dusk.

3 - Valenca do Miño (Portugal también)
Aveiro, The Portuguese Venice, canals, bridges, painted boats, moliceiros, São Jacinto, Barra
Aveiro is situated 68 km to the south of Porto and 58 km north of Coimbra, straddling the ria Aveiro and the river Vouga a few kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean, where you can easily reach by car (5 minutes) or by BUS (every hour).174
The city of Aveiro has a population of approximately 57,000 inhabitants, where 14,000 are students at University of Aveiro, one of the most important Portuguese Universities
Part of the city is bathed through canals, bridges, and painted boats called moliceiros, similar to the gondolas of Venice. For this reason, the city is called the Portuguese Venice, although the comparison is obviously exaggerated.
The real charm of Aveiro lies in its coast, with its fantastic sandy beaches has São Jacinto, Barra and Costa Nova. This local coast is well known as Silver Coast, due to the beautifull and clean beaches.
Aveiro has humid wet temperate climate, coolish in the summer and not so cold in winter. November, December, and January make up the rainy season, while July and August are the driest months. Autumn and Winter tend to have strong coastal winds, excellent for kyte or wind-surf, as well as sailboat amazing conditions.
