Adventures In Saxony, Germany (Saxon Switzerland & Dresden)
From the Bastei Bridge, and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in Saxon Switzerland,, to Dresden's beautiful architecture, it’s time to get to know Saxony in Germany.
Last month Macca from An Adventurous World and I headed off on an epic adventure with two very different elements. We explored the stunning natural landscapes of Saxon Switzerland, hiking around the Bastei, checking out the Bastei Bridge and some stunning waterfalls and viewpoints too.
We also visited Dresden, to see the stunning architecture of a city that has been almost entirely rebuilt.
Although I've visited Germany five times, this trip showed me a whole new side to the country. I can't wait to see more soon!
Big thanks to Germany Tourism and Saxony Tourism for inviting us to explore this beautiful region of Germany! As always all opinions are our own.

Saxon Switzerland National Park , is a National Park in the German Free State of Saxony, near the Saxon capital Dresden.
It covers two areas of 93.5 square kilometres in the heart of the German part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, which is often called (the) Saxon Switzerland.
The National Park adjoins Bohemian Switzerland National Park in the Czech Republic.
The National Park is the centre of a natural area of almost 710 square kilometres.
This region is called Saxon Switzerland and is cultivated by humans in many places.
Some smaller towns and villages like Bad Schandau or Königstein in the district of Sächsische Schweiz are part of this region.
The core area of the National Park has a quiescent area of 40% and is covered almost completely by forest.
The status of National Park, which grants the highest natural protection in Germany, was established in 1990.
Saxon Switzerland is an intensively fissured and rocky canyon landscape.
The highest peak of the National Park is at 556 metres above sea level but only in short distance to the valley of the Elbe river at 110 to 120 metres.
It offers several different habitats and microclimate zones due to its strong vertical division.
The National Park still hosts some forms of forest without human intervention, which is an exception in central Europe.
The special forms of mountain forest and gorge forest are endangered in Europe generally.
Because of the sabulous soil and the fissures many places in that area are drier than normal for the temperate zone and offers rough conditions.
This makes this area so special.
The National Parks are, in some cases, in conflict with tourism and recreation.
One objective is to raise the inviolate area to 75%, which means limiting the areas of hiking and climbing.
Today there are some 400 kilometres of hiking paths, 49.9 kilometres of biking paths, and 755 climbing locations with around 12,600 possibilities of climbing routes.
The National Park is part of a larger region that serves as a recreation area close to Dresden.
Bad Schandau has a station in the EuroCity network and is some 45 minutes away from Dresden.

Saxon Switzerland - Alongside the Elbe | Discover Germany
Saxon Switzerland is a national park around the Elbe valley south-east of Dresden which forms part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Like the many painters who were based here in the 18th century, modern day tourists often set out on the River Elbe to explore this romantic landscape by boat.

The history of tourism in Germany goes back to cities and landscapes being visited for education and recreation. From the late 18th century onwards, cities like Dresden, Munich, Weimar and Berlin were major stops on a European Grand tour.
Spas and Seaside resorts on the North and Baltic Sea (e.g. Rugia and Usedom islands, Heiligendamm, Norderney and Sylt islands) particularly developed during the 19th and early 20th century, when major train routes were built to connect the seaside spas to urban centers. An extense bathing and recreation industry materialized in Germany around 1900. At rivers and close to natural landscapes (along the Middle Rhine valley and in Saxon Switzerland for example) many health spas, hotels and recreational facilities were established since the 19th century.
Since the end of World War II tourism has expanded greatly, as many tourists visit Germany to experience a sense of European history and the diverse German landscape. The country features 14 national parks, including the Jasmund National Park, the Vorpommern Lagoon Area National Park, the Müritz National Park, the Wadden Sea National Parks, the Harz National Park, the Hainich National Park, the Saxon Switzerland National Park, the Bavarian Forest National Park and the Berchtesgaden National Park. In addition, there are 14 Biosphere Reserves, as well as 98 nature parks.
The countryside has a pastoral aura, while the bigger cities exhibit both a modern and classical feel. Small and medium-sized cities often preserved their historical appearance and have old towns with remarkable architectural heritage - these are called Altstadt in German.
