Rothenburg, Germany
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is situated in the state Bavaria of south Germany.
The city was founded in 970 whereas the fortress was built later in 1080. It was the almost mid 13th century when the city got its fortified boundaries, marketplace and town church.
After about 45% demolition in world war II, today the city is rebuilt and represents a beautiful medieval town.
Before we proceed, do not forget to subscribe varshastravel360 for more such videos.
At the entrance to the old town, there is a display of information about the area.
Upon entering the old town, one can see a town wall and half-timbered, red-roofed houses.
Most of the roads are paved roads.
The town has many entrances and these are guarded by towers. These towers are characteristics of Rothenburg old town.
The old town has small lanes and alleys with shops and restaurants alongside. Let's walkthrough
This is St. Jacob’s church.
In front of this church, there is a 3d miniature model of the old town of Rothenburg.
A small alley in front of this church leads to ‘Herrngasse’. A beautiful fountain – Herrnbrunnen stands in the middle and old styled medieval buildings line up along the sides. This street leads to castle garden on one side and to the Marketplace on another side. Various shops and cafes are also present on this street.
Let’s first go to the marketplace.
This is a marketplace or town hall square. The square hosts a St, Georg fountain on one side. Some popular medieval, half-timbered buildings such as pharmacy, grain storage building and Meat and dancehall are raised around the square. Even if you are not visiting during Christmas time, the visit to unique Christmas museum here will light up your festive mood.
There is a town hall in the background. This is a place for weekly markets and local public events.
From marketplace, one can enter on another popular shopping street – Schmiedgasse.
It is studded with numerous shops, cafes and restaurants. There is Criminal museum also on this street. Note the medieval style rot iron signs on the shops.
Schmiedgasse leads to little square. The signature towers of the Rothenburg are present here. This is most popular place in the town. There are two towers which mark the entry in the old town area. The yellow colored timbered house in the center stands out prominently.
While walking along the fortification, we reach to the castle garden.
This info board gives detailed information about the place.
The garden has this lively fountain and colourful flower beds. There is a river valley on left-hand side. The view over the old town, its red rooves above the lush green valley is refreshing. There are few medieval water mills in the valley.
The entrance of this castle garden is called as burgtor. It had a small gate which allowed only one person at a time to pass through. This gate was built mainly as a defense from any invasions from the south side.
While walking around the town, as said earlier, we come across many entrance towers like this one. This is a Markus tower.
The last important place to visit in Rothenburg is the town fortification. We can walk along the entire length of the wall. This wall was highly destroyed during WWII. Now it is rebuilt with the help of donations from all over the world. Their names are inscripted on the wall.
There are some enclosed areas which were used as storage for artilleries etc. The entire structure is supported by wooden columns.
Rothenburg is a laid-back small town with history and culture. Christmas museum, entrance towers, water mills and medieval half-timbered houses make the place enchanting.

Bergfestung Rothenberg (Franken) anno 1300 (4K)
