Birgu, Cospicua and Isla were the center of The Great Seige of Malta in 1565 when the Ottoman Empire attacked the Knights of St.John capital. Today, little shows from this epic battle as much of the cities and their fascinating architecture have been restored.

EDEN DESTINATIONS IN MALTA & GOZO

There are six EDEN award-winning destinations in the Maltese Islands: Senglea, Mellieha and the Hamlet of Manikata, Gharb, Nadur, Kercem - the Hamlet of Santa Lucija and Xaghra.

The EDEN initiative is an initiative promoting sustainable tourism development models across the EU. It is based on national competitions that take place every other year and result in the selection of a tourist ‘destination of excellence ‘ for each participating country. Through the selection of destinations, EDEN effectively achieves the objective of drawing attention to the values, diversity and common features of European tourist destinations.

This promotional video produced by MTA was launched at a special conference held on 27 October 2016 at Mellieha Holiday Centre. An itinerary of the six destinations was also launched during the Conference. The event and the itinerary are co-funded by the European Commission and the Ministry for Tourism.
