1. Patee House Museum Saint Joseph Missouri
The Patee House, also known as Patee House Museum, was completed in 1858 as a 140-room luxury hotel at 12th Street and Penn in St. Joseph, Missouri. It was one of the best-known hotels west of the Mississippi River.The Patee House was built by John Patée as part of his Patee Town development around the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad station. Office space included the headquarters and eastern terminus of the Pony Express, founded in 1860 to provide fast overland mail service to the West Coast. During the American Civil War, the Union Army Provost Marshal's office was located in Patee House. The Army conducted war trials in the second floor ballroom. After the war, the Patee Female College operated in the building from 1865-1868. Its space was taken over 1875-1880 by the St. Joseph Female...

It was founded in 1973 on the campus of the University of South Dakota. The Pony Express was a mail service delivering messages, newspapers, and mail. Officially operating as the Leavenworth and Pike's Peak Express Company of 1859, in 1860 it became the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company; this firm was founded by William H. Russell, Alexander Majors, and William B. Waddell, all of whom were notable in the freighting business.During its 18 months of operation, it reduced the time for messages to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to about 10 days. From April 3, 1860 to October 1861, it became the West's most direct means of east–west communication before the transcontinental telegraph was established , and was vital for tying the new state of California with the rest of the United States.

The Glore Psychiatric Museum is part of a complex of St. Joseph, Missouri museums, along with the Black Archives Museum and the St. Joseph Museum and American Indian and History Galleries. Its exhibits feature the 130-year history of the adjacent state mental hospital, and illustrate the history of mental health treatment through the ages. It has been called one of the fifty most unusual museums in the United States.

Roosevelt National Park

In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick Regan, Maggie, and Kate visited Theodore Roosevelt National Park, one of two Roosevelt National Parks in the badlands of North Dakota. It is a great place for families to visit in the summer, when the weather in North Dakota is fantastic. Camping in North Dakota will give you the opportunity to see beautiful landscape, open prairies, and tons of wildlife, including wild horses, buffalo, elk, coyote, porcupine, and thousands of prairie dogs. There is also a great Visitor's Center at the entrance to the park, and the rangers give daily tours of the cabin that Teddy Roosevelt lived in when he lived in North Dakota prior to becoming President. Camping locations and camping sites are located along the Little Missouri River. North Dakota maps show hotels in North Dakota, including nearby Medora, North Dakota. Families will have a great time in Roosevelt National Park, as Cheap Family Travel discovered when they spent several days in Roosevelt National Park watching wild animals, enjoying the scenery and weather, and relaxing along the Little Mo.

▶︎ A North Dakota Gem
While this may be in the middle of nowhere, it is worth the trip off the beaten path. From what I understand, the north unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park is even leas visited and less crowded. We were there in the middle of the summer and only saw a handful of others. The scenery is breathtaking and unique, not exactly like anything else I have ever seen. There are abundant buffalo wandering the fields roads. The campground was quiet and clean, kind of in a prairie with abundant trees. While we didn't go hiking, there are a few trails, both long (18 mile backpacking loop) and short. If you are making the trip to Glacier from the east, don't miss this park/campground!
