South Jutland County is a former county on the south-central portion of the Jutland Peninsula in southern Denmark. The county was formed on 1 April, 1970, comprising the former counties of Aabenraa , Haderslev , Sønderborg , and Tønder . The county was abolished effective 1 January, 2007, when the Region of Southern Denmark was formed. Following the reunification of the region with Denmark, the Church of Denmark elevated Haderslev to a diocese in 1923 and divided the region between the dioceses of Ribe and Haderslev . This arrangement remains in effect.

    Ribe is a Danish town in south-west Jutland, with a population of 8,168 . It is the seat of the Diocese of Ribe covering southwestern Jutland. Until 1 January 2007, Ribe was the seat of both a surrounding municipality, and county. It is now part of the enlarged Esbjerg Municipality in the Region of Southern Denmark. Ribe is the oldest extant town in Denmark, established in the early eighth century in the Germanic Iron Age.

By road, it is 71 kilometres west of Kolding and 164 kilometres southwest of Aarhus. With an urban population of 71,618 , it is the fifth-largest city in Denmark, and the largest in west Jutland. Before a decision was made to establish a harbour at Esbjerg in 1868, the area consisted of only a few farms. Esbjerg developed quickly with the population rising to 13,000 by 1901 and 70,000 by 1970. In addition to its fishing and shipping activities, it also became an important centre for agricultural exports.     The ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum is an art museum in Aarhus, Denmark. The museum was established in 1859 and is the oldest public art museum in Denmark outside Copenhagen. On 8 April 2004, ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum opened with exhibitions in a brand new modern building, 10 storeys tall with a total floor area of 20,700 m² and designed by Danish architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen. Today ARoS is one of the largest art museums in Northern Europe with a total of 980,909 visitors in 2017.
