South Jutland County is a former county on the south-central portion of the Jutland Peninsula in southern Denmark. The county was formed on 1 April, 1970, comprising the former counties of Aabenraa , Haderslev , Sønderborg , and Tønder . The county was abolished effective 1 January, 2007, when the Region of Southern Denmark was formed. Following the reunification of the region with Denmark, the Church of Denmark elevated Haderslev to a diocese in 1923 and divided the region between the dioceses of Ribe and Haderslev . This arrangement remains in effect.

    Ribe is a Danish town in south-west Jutland, with a population of 8,168 . It is the seat of the Diocese of Ribe covering southwestern Jutland. Until 1 January 2007, Ribe was the seat of both a surrounding municipality, and county. It is now part of the enlarged Esbjerg Municipality in the Region of Southern Denmark. Ribe is the oldest extant town in Denmark, established in the early eighth century in the Germanic Iron Age.
