Places to see in ( Tomintoul - UK )
Tomintoul is a village in the Moray council area of Scotland; until 1975 it was in the county of Banffshire. It is said to be the highest village in the Scottish Highlands, but at 345 m is still much lower than the highest village in Scotland. The village was laid out on a grid pattern by the 4th Duke of Gordon in 1775. It followed the construction, twenty years previously, of a military road by William Caulfeild – now the A939. By 1841 the parish reached a population of 1,722. In 1951 this had fallen to just 531. The 2001 census reveals a village population of 322 with the total parish population now unavailable.
The 2004 film One Last Chance starring Kevin McKidd and Dougray Scott was filmed in the village and the areas around it. Despite its small size, it is on the famed Whisky Trail, which also includes Dufftown, Keith, Tomnavoulin, and Marypark. The surrounding countryside forms the Glenlivet Estate Tomintoul Golf Club (now defunct) was founded in 1897. The club and course disappeared at the time of WW2.
The Gordon Arms Hotel saw significant improvement in the 1990s when it was lavished with funds from the media-styled 'Lord Tony Williams'. It is a myth that villagers referred to Tony Williams as 'Lord': this was a media invention. Chiefly of interest to genealogists, James Stuart (1791–1874), a local farmer at Lynchork (pronounced Linnahork) appears in a number of birth, baptism, death and Kirk Session records in this and surrounding parishes as the admitted or reputed father of children of his female servants.
Grigor Willox was a reputed white witch who lived in Tomintoul in the 18th century. He was said to derive his powers from two amulets: a brass hook from a kelpie's bridle and a mermaid's crystal. Among his alleged powers were making cows produce milk, curing barren women, and detecting thieves.

Touring Scotland in a Motorhome #11 Inverewe Gardens to Applecross NC500
Inverewe Gardens, Poolewe to Applecross #11 Tuesday 26th June
Leaving the beautiful Inverewe Gardens Campsite I was heading for Applecross. The weather was getting better and it was almost time for the air conditioning at a steady 70 degrees. The latter part of the drive was the most enjoyable, I prefer the long way round to Applecross rather than the Applecross Pass, the views are plentiful and there are many places to stop and take in the views! The campsite at Applecross can be very busy mid summer so booking is recommended.
A 5 minute walk ti the Inn takes you down to the front where there is ample seating outside, the food is excellent and the cosy bar friendly. It provides B&B and again booking is advised. A superb spot to end the day and watch the sunset of a cool drink!!

Hirsel Estate, Coldstream, Scottish Borders
In 1611, the first Earl of Home contracted to buy the Hirsel Estate from Sir John Kerr – although it was not until 1621 that King James VI finally granted the lands of Hirsel to James, the 2nd Earl of Home.
Much of the early tree planting and the existence of the earliest part of Hirsel House appear to have been built by about 1620.

Hiking Zermatt to Wisshorn Switzerland - Valais Blacknose Sheep
Music: Atmospheric Pearls by Mahoroba / Seraphim by Midori
(Swiss German below)
Beautiful hike from Zermatt, through Trift and up to Wisshorn, then back to excellent food and lodgings at the Berggasthaus Trift for the night. Enjoyed seeing Swiss Valais Blacknose sheep, too.
Valais Blacknose Sheep Rescue: As you can see in the video, while on our descent, Neil, an expert mountain guide, ski instructor and climber suddenly tackled a Swiss Valais Blacknose sheep - much to my astonishment.
Turns out he’s an expert on sheep as well. He noticed the Blacknose had a 0.5 meter piece of grounding cable with sharp, stabbing frayed ends entangled in its wool on its underside, so he snuck around beside it and made a sportsman tackle.
We helped hold the sheep while Neil cut the cable free with a knife but not before one of the frayed ends was jabbed into his hand by the struggling Blacknose. Some quick first aid and they were both happily back on the trail. We buried the cable under some nearby rocks. That’s a lucky Blacknose!
Wisshorn mountain rises up from the town of Zermatt. It is located at the north side of the town, like Mettelhorn and Platthorn mountains. It can be walked up during the summer months following the Edelweiss path. On the top of the mountain are avalanche barriers protecting Zermatt from icy winters, otherwise it is covered by soil. Views towards Gornergrat ridge, Monte Rosa massif, Savoy Alps and Weisshorn are excellent. One can also see down to town of Zermatt.

Exploring Speyside (and beyond) EP.3 | Forres to Lossiemouth (Moray Coast Trail)
On days 5 and 6, my journey through Speyside extended to the Moray Coast where I walked (difficultly) from Forres to Lossiemouth, staying overnight in Findhorn... and ending up making an unexpected change of route.
