France and Beyond Part 6 - Colmar
We spend a few days in the picturesque towns in the Alsace region of France. Staying in Colmar we visit Kayersberg, Turckheim, and Equisheim. Ending with a visit to the Chateau du Haut-Koenigsbourg.
You can watch all my videos here:
Colmar, the quintessence of Alsace
Little Venice, Unterlinden Museum, the House of heads, the tanning district, Bartholdi Museum, Pfister House – we could spend all day enumerating enchanting sites in the seat of the Haut Rhin département. But we have better to do – take you round, for example.
Ribeauville, Alsace - France 4K Travel Channel
Ribeauvillé is our last stop during this visit to Alsace. The picturesque town is located around 55 km southwest of Strasbourg and 15 km northwest of Colmar. Any place to which we have gone in the Alsace till now has characteristics of its own and is not comparable with the others. This also applies to Ribeauville.
The most important street of the town is the Grand Rue. It cuts the town from east to west. Almost all important sights can be seen here.
We park the car in the Rue de Rempart de la Streng. After a short walk through the Rue des Juifs, we reach the Grand Rue. At the Place de la 1ère Armée, we film some statues of the Pfiffer (piper). On the first Sunday of September Ribeauville celebrates the Pfifferdaj, the fiddlers' festival. The Minstrels Festival is the oldest festival in Alsace. The minstrels of the entire region commemorate their former noble patron, the Lords Ribeaupierre of Ribeauvillé, with parades and artistic costumes. On this day they confirm the oath of allegiance.
Then we head west, past the town hall to the Butchers Tower, Tour de Bouchers. In this belfry from the 13th century, there is a bell which rang the nighttime curfew in the Middle Ages. In the passage, we see many swallows nest.
The Place de la Sinne is framed by magnificent half-timbered houses, most of which serve as a hotel. In the middle, you can see a beautiful fountain with a female statue in the middle, which symbolizes the town. It bears various symbols such as grapes, a wine barrel and coat of arms of the municipalities of the canton.
In the northern direction, you can reach St. Gregory's Church. But we continue towards the west until we almost reach the outskirts.
The three ruins of a castle Saint-Ulrich, Girsberg and Haut-Ribeaupierre sit enthroned above the vineyards on the outskirts of the town.
We turn around and watch the storks that live here. At the Place de la 1ère Armee we admire the facade of the Auberge at the Elephant of 1522, now the restaurant La Poste.
Next to it, one has built but a large nest for storks. We are looking for a place in the Winstub La Flammerie in the Grand Rue, from where we have a good overview.

FRANCE: Riquewihr village [HD]
A popular tourist attraction for its historical architecture, Riquewihr looks today more or less as it did in the 16th century. It was one of the few towns in the area not to be badly damaged during World War II. The town is surrounded by its medieval fortifications and is overlooked by a castle from the same period that is today a museum.
The village of Riquewihr is also known for the Riesling and other great wines produced in the village.
Riquewihr is located in the Alsace region, 11 km (7 miles) from the city of Colmar.

EGUISHEIM THE HEART OF ALSACE
Eguisheim ('most beautiful villages of France') is found near Colmar in Alsace, in the Haut-Rhin department of France.
Eguisheim is almost an offshoot of Colmar, but has its history as a separate, important, town.
The winding, cobbled streets of Eguisheim are lined with traditional medieval half-timbered buildings, brightly painted as are many of the buildings in Alsace. There are also fountains, flowers and ...storks.
Wander along the Rue du Rempart Sud which follows the line of the former moat. Its narrow street is lined with brightly coloured, higgledy piggledy houses. At the entrance to the street is the charming dovecote giving this a picture postcard beauty.
Walk up the Grand Rue of Eguisheim and see a selection of manor houses, inns and other houses all painted the blues, yellows, pinks and greens beloved of the Alsace region.
A little further up is the place du chateau with its chateau, church, colourful houses, fountain and ... storks! (I had been in Alsace 4 days when I got to Eguisheim and these are the first storks I had seen - though continuing south through Haut Rhin I did see more.) There are two nests in Eguisheim and a Stork sanctuary on the edge of the village where they are hoping to breed and re-introduce storks to the region.
There are plenty of bars, restaurants and accommodation in Eguisheim making this a good base for exploring the region. (I stayed at the Pierre and Vacances apartments on the edge of town. These were nice, well-equipped apartments in bright, Alsace-style buildings which were easy walking distance of Eguisheim centre. The PandV apartments have secure parking and a heated indoor pool.)Eguisheim is one of the villages on the Route du Vin running from Thann to Marlenheim. This medieval town was built in concentric circles round its fortified castle, where the only Pope from Alsace, Leo IX, is said to have been born. It has a unique combination of civil and military architecture from the 15th Century. There is a pleasant signposted walk round the ramparts, actually following the old sentry path round the battlements. Everywhere are half-timbered houses, with balconies weighed down with the red geraniums which have become part of the heritage of Alsace !
