- Glacier's Historic Boats - National Park
In 1910, when Glacier National Park was first established, early sightseers found that boat tours offered a comfortable and adventurous way to see the parks wild landscape.
In 1929, a Flathead Valley boat builder Billy Swanson finished building the DeSmet, a 57- foot-long boat that he launched onto Lake McDonald. It's been in operation ever since.
The DeSmet was the latest in a series of boats built by Swanson starting in the 1920s including Chief Two Guns, Morning Eagle, Sinopah and the International.
Today, one hundred years after the park's opening, these same classic boats still operate on Glacier's alpine lakes as part of the Glacier Park Boat Company a company owned and operated by the same family that ran tours on the lakes way back in the 1920s. For an adventure you won't soon forget, take a ride on Glacier's historic boats.

Glacier Explorers, Aoraki Mt Cook
Be humbled by nature. Where mountains tower over you and ice bergs surround you, it’s easy to feel small. Explore the Tasman Glacier at Aoraki Mt Cook, in New Zealand.
An amazing encounter with New Zealand's largest glacier, the Tasman Glacier. Explore and learn about the ever-changing glacial landscape as you journey across the terminal lake in our custom-built MAC Boats with your experienced guides. Icebergs of every shape and size periodically tear away from the face of the glacier into the rapidly growing lake. Lateral moraines rear up almost 200m to remind us of the scale and greatness that the glacier has reached in previous times.
With the effects of global warming and other climatic processes taking their toll on New Zealand glaciers, their retreat is imminent. Now approximately 27km long and 600m deep, the Tasman Glacier is melting and calving at an exponentially increasing rate. In recent years the Tasman Glacier has changed from a 'melting' to a 'calving and melting' terminus, resulting in a terminal lake that is rapidly increasing in size.

Two Medicine at Glacier National Park, Montana
Before the Going-to-the-Sun Road was constructed, Two Medicine was a primary destination for travelers arriving by train. After spending a night at Glacier Park Lodge, visitors climbed on horseback to travel to Two Medicine for a night in one of several rustic chalets or canvas tipis built by the Great Northern Railway. From Two Medicine, a system of backcountry tent camps and chalets within the park allowed these adventurous visitors to live in Glacier's wild interior.
Backpackers and dayhikers find this area rich in scenery, providing those willing to travel by foot into the mountains with a true wilderness experience. Tenderfeet can also venture off the roads and into the wild with a casual boat tour on Two Medicine Lake.
Today, Two Medicine has become a somewhat off-the-beaten-path discovery for most park visitors. Once discovered however it's easy to see why many people consider this their favorite part of Glacier National Park. Amazing vistas, extensive trails, crashing waterfalls, and sparkling lakes await.
For a live glimpse of the Two Medicine area, check out our Webcam page; we have a webcam pointed at the prominent peaks.

Over the years Cajune Boatbuiling has developed an intriguing business model that favors quality of life over increased production.
