clubgeographic.com – Spoleto is an alluring walled medieval hill town first inhabited by the Umbri tribes who built the city on the slopes of a sacred mountain in the Apennines of Umbria.
The grand Rocca Albomoziana Fortress (1359-1370) overlooks the historic town. To one side is the Ponte delle Torri (Bridge of Towers) which spans the deep gorge.
For the hikers, there are a number of excellent hiking trips in the area including the popular Via Francigena pilgrimage route which passes through the area on the way to Rome.

Spoleto Italy
Spoleto appears to have been an important town to the original Umbri tribes, who built walls around their settlement in the 5th century BCE. Under the Lombards, Spoleto became the capital of an independent duchy. In 774 it became part of Holy Roman Empire. Together with other fiefs, it was bequeathed to Pope Gregory VII by the powerful countess Matilda of Tuscany, In 1155 it was destroyed by Frederick Barbarossa. In 1213 it was definitively occupied by Pope Gregory IX. During the absence of the papal court in Avignon, it was prey to the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines, until in 1354 Cardinal Albornoz brought it once more under the authority of the Papal States. After Napoleon's conquest of Italy, in 1809 Spoleto became capital of the short-lived French department of Trasimène, returning to the Papal States after Napoleon's defeat. In 1860, after a gallant defense, Spoleto was taken by the troops fighting for the unification of Italy.

L'atmosfera di Bettona, comune umbro in provincia di Perugia, ci riporta indietro di molti secoli, ma allo stesso tempo ci immerge in un'ospitalità viva e colorita, dalla solarità contagiosa.
Le sue radici lontane sono testimoniate dal nome stesso, che significa probabilmente paese degli antichi, e il profumo del passato è una presenza affascinante che invade ogni angolo del borgo, ogni pietra delle mura e ogni ciottolo delle strade.
Popolata da poco più di seicento abitati nel borgo e 4 mila nel comune, la cittadina si colloca al confine nordorientale dei Monti Martani, ed è compresa a ragione tra i Borghi più belli d'Italia. Non solo il paese, ma anche la cornice che l'abbraccia è di una bellezza stupefacente: dal colle su cui Bettona si erge si può godere di un panorama splendido su gran parte dell'Umbria, da Perugia ad Assisi, fino alla pittoresca Spello, in un tripudio di verdi teneri e coltivazioni ondeggianti nel vento.
Tra gli esemplari più antichi dell'architettura paesana c'è la Chiesa di San Crispolto, fatta erigere da un gruppo di monaci benedettini all'inizio del Duecento per custodire le spoglie del primo vescovo e martire umbro, tuttora patrono di Bettona. La pianta è a croce latina, e la facciata che si può ammirare oggi è di epoca ottocentesca. Soltanto la torre campanaria cuspidata, in stile romanico, appartiene all'edificio originario. Del XIII secolo è anche l'Oratorio di Sant'Andrea, più volte modificato nel corso dei secoli ma tuttora ricco di fascino: il soffitto a cassettoni, di fattura pregiata, è del XVI secolo, l'altare risale al Settecento ed è del 1394 il ciclo di affreschi di scuola giottesca che rappresenta la Passione di Cristo.
Ma l'edificio di culto più affascinante è certamente la Collegiata di Santa Maria Maggiore, risalente ai primi anni del Cristianesimo, ampliata e nuovamente consacrata nel 1225, per poi essere restaurata secondo il tipico stile neoclassico tra il 1803 e il 1816. Soltanto la cappella ci rimanda al primo impianto romano-gotico, mentre ben più recenti sono i dipinti nell'abside, realizzati dal futurista Gerardo Dottori nel 1939. Ammirevole l'altare principale, con un ciborio a forma di tempietto, l'abside e le finestre con i vetri istoriati.
La religiosità dell'antico borgo è sempre stata forte e autentica, ma a Bettona ci sono anche architetture civili di indiscutibile valore. Da vedere il Palazzetto del Podestà del 1371, che attualmente ospita la Pinacoteca Comunale, l'ottocentesco Palazzo Biancalana che presto ospiterà il Museo Archeologico, e infine il Palazzo Baglioni, in cui trascorse i suoi ultimi giorni il condottiero Malatesta IV Baglioni, la cui famiglia governò il paese fino al XVII secolo. Spingendosi un poco al di fuori del centro ci si imbatte nella mole grandiosa della Villa del Boccaglione, progettata nel Settecento dal Piermarini, e nella piccola chiesa romanica di San Quirico. Dell'anno Mille è la Badia di San Crispoldo, fondata dai monaci benedettini e oggi trasformata in residenza privata.
Se Bettona fa innamorare i turisti nelle giornate più tranquille dell'anno, figurarsi nei momenti di festa più allegri, quando le stradicciole del borgo sono brulicanti di visitatori e tutto testimonia le tradizioni accattivanti del paese. Tra gli appuntamenti più attesi c'è il Festival Internazionale del Cavallo e la Sagra dello Sport, la prima metà di luglio, con stand gastronomici a disposizione dei palati più esigenti, concerti musicali, serate danzanti e gare equestri a livello nazionale e internazionale. Dalla fine di luglio alla prima settimana di agosto la protagonista della festa diventa l'oca arrosto, in occasione della Sagra dell'Oca Arrosto, ma i piatti deliziosi che si possono degustare sono davvero innumerevoli, accompagnati da un olio d'oliva purissimo e il buon vino delle cantine locali. Per salutare l'estate che se ne va c'è la manifestazione settembrina Tuttinfesta, con musica, buon cibo e spettacoli di vario tipo all'insegna dell'allegria.

Il borgo medievale di Citerna si trova in provincia di Perugia e sorprende i visitatori con camminamenti di grande suggestione, mura, torri e un complesso sistema di cunicoli.
E' unica tra i borghi del centro Italia per la sua rarissima struttura architettonica organizzata su due livelli urbanistici sovrapposti: il borgo medioevale con strade, vicoli, monumenti, punti panoramici da cui abbracciare l'intera Valle del Tevere e, nel sottosuolo gli ammassi con camminamenti, percorsi, volte e antiche cisterne per la raccolta di acque piovane, che danno origine al nome del borgo.
Di antiche origini etrusche il suo territorio fu densamente popolato anche in età romana come è attestato dai ritrovamenti di fittili e monete in tutto il territorio. Nel periodo medioevale fu aspramente contesa tra la ghibellina Arezzo e la guelfa Città di Castello, divenendo ambito feudo delle più potenti famiglie dell'epoca.
Nel 1463 passò allo Stato Pontificio che nel 1500 la concesse in vicariato alla famiglia Vitelli di Città di Castello che con alterne vicende, arrichendola di monumenti e opere d'arte, la resse fino alla fine del XVII secolo. Nel 1849 ospitò Garibaldi mentre si ritirava verso Ravenna e nel 1860, prima fra tutte le città umbre, entrò a far parte del Regno d'Italia.
Citerna ospita un'opera di grande pregio, che è la Madonna col Bambino di Donatello, opere di Pomarancio, scuola di Raffaellino dal Colle e Signorelli. (testo di:Loredana Corina Bobinca Berbece)

It is the only village in the Italian center having a rare architectural based on two urban overlapping lyers: the medieval village with its streets, alleys, monuments and viewponts from where to see the entire upper Tibber valley.
In the underground layer there are clusters with walkways, vaulted ancient cisterns for the water gathering that gives the name to village.
With its ancient Etruscan origin its territory was densely populated also in Roman times, as is testified by fictiles and coins, found all around the area. During the Middle Ages it was a bitter bone of contention between Ghibelline Arezzo and Guelph Città di Castello. In 1463 it passed to the Papal - State and in the year 1500 Citerna was given in vicar to the family Vitelli from Città di Castello, which with alternate events and after having it enriched with work of art and monuments, kept it until the end of the XVII century. In 1849, Citerna gave hospitality to Garibaldi whilst he retreated towrds Ravenna and in 1860 it entered, being the first Umbrian town, to be part of the Italian Kingdom.
Citerna hosts a work of great value, which is the Madonna and Child by Donatello, newly restored, works of Pomarancio and Raffaellino dal Colle's school and Signorelli's school.

THE VILLA
Tenuta Sospesa is a traditional stone-built country house, dating back to the Eighteenth Century, that has been attractively restored. The beautiful architecture of the main house is adorned with a turret and external staircase, typical of the region. Upstairs are the original terracotta floor tiles, wood-beamed ceilings and walls stripped back to reveal the original stone.
The villa can accommodate groups of 2 / 4 / 6 / 8 people adding bedrooms and bathrooms as each guest requires.
APARTMENT FOR 1-2 PEOPLE comprises 1 double room, living room, kitchen, 1 bathroom.

Our self-contained apartment has been attractively restored but still keeps its traditional Umbrian atmosphere with its characteristic exposed stonework and its beautiful beams and tiles. The living room is comfy and welcoming, the kitchen is well-equipped, the bedrooms are charming and spacious. We can set up each bedroom either as a double room or twin room to suit your needs. Bed lined is included and, on request, we can provide a cot for children. The bathrooms are traditional but beautifully updated, well-equipped and provided with a security system. Towels and hairdryer are included.
The apartment also has a large garden with a marvellous orchard, solarium, gazebo area, BBQ and parking. There is full broadband and wifi onsite for use both in and outside the apartment.

Guests can enjoy outdoor tables and pergolas, shaded by trees, to soak up the beautiful panorama, the summer warmth or eat al fresco. There are also winding pathways to explore and an exquisite gazebo covered with climbing plants, as well as a swimming pool hidden by cypresses and a variety of roses. It is also possible to use the old bread oven for barbecues or to make pizza under the stars!

The unique location of Tenuta Sospesa makes it perfect to discover both Umbria itself and Tuscany, which is only 30 minutes drive away. Lake Trasimeno is a 15 minute drive away and offers many water activities and sports. Tenuta Sospesa is not far from the A1 Motorway that connects to Florence in 1hr 30mins and to Rome in 2hrs. It is only 19 km from Perugia with its small but international airport (Ryanair offers direct flights from London Stansted and Brussels Charleroi). As a result, it is a great starting point to visit all of central Italy. Finally, the property overlooks the beautiful historic village of Montepetriolo and is situated at a stone's throw from the medieval Cibottola Castle.
