Grassington is a market town and civil parish in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England. The population at the 2011 Census was 1,126. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the town is situated in Wharfedale, about 8 miles (10 km) north-west from Bolton Abbey, and is surrounded by limestone scenery. Nearby villages include Linton, Threshfield, Hebden, Conistone and Kilnsey.
The Domesday Book lists Grassington as part of the estate of Gamal Barn including 7 carucates of ploughland (840 acres/350ha) including Grassington, Linton and Threshfield. The Norman conquest of England made it part of the lands of Gilbert Tison. But by 1118 Tison had suffered a demotion and his lands returned to the king then given to Lord Percy.
Originally the settlement was spelt as Gherinstone and also was documented as Garsington or Gersington. The name Grassington derives variously from the Scandinavian, Anglo-Saxon and Gothic languages and means either the town of the grassy ings or a farmstead surrounded by grass.
Grassington was historically a township in the parish of Linton in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It became a separate civil parish in 1866, and was transferred to North Yorkshire in 1974. Although often described by local people as a village, Grassington was granted a Royal Charter for a market and fair in 1282 giving it market town status.
Grassington is the main residential and tourist centre in Upper Wharfedale. Centred on its small cobbled square are shops, public houses, the village museum, small cafes, restaurants and hotels. Grassington Folk Museum houses a collection which tells the story of Wharfedale. Grassington Festival is a two-week-long annual event started in 1980, with music, performance and visual arts, held in a number of venues around the village.
Grassington is served by the B6265, which runs between Skipton and Green Hammerton via Pateley Bridge and Boroughbridge (being a more circuitous route that the A59 road which connects Skipton and Green Hammerton). Buses connect Grassington with Ilkley and Skipton operating a moderate service to Skipton, but only a three-day a week service to Ilkley. The town used to have a joint railway station terminus with Threshfield on the Yorkshire Dales Railway. The station was located on the west side of the River Wharfe, so it was not actually in Grassington.

Yorkshire Dales Country Walk Calendar Girls Hetton Rylstone Cracoe round
Our video is a guided circular walk in the Yorkshire Dales. Starting from the village of Hetton situated between Grassington and Skipton we walk to Rylstone the home of the Calendar Girls. We then make our way uphill to the Cross and the War Memorial on the Rylstone Edges. We return to Hetton via Cracoe Fell and Cracoe village. This is an easy to moderate walk on grass and gravel tracks and paths, short distance on minor tarmac road and a marshy area at the bottom of Cracoe Fell.
Elevation: approx lowest point 166.10m (545ft) approx highest point 502.60m (1649ft) approx ascent 425.50m (1396ft)
Approx 7.7 miles allow 3½ - 4 hours using OS Explorer Map OL2, Yorkshire Dales Southern and Western areas. This walk is done anti-clockwise.

Yorkshire Dales Country Walk Settle to Victoria Cave round
Our video is a guided walk in the Yorkshire Dales from Settle to Victoria Cave. Victoria Cave was named after an inner chamber was discovered by chance in 1837 on the day of Queen Victoria’s coronation. This is an easy to moderate walk on stony, gravel and grass tracks and paths with gates and stiles. There are some steep inclines and declines. Elevation: approx lowest point 152.7m (501ft) approx highest point 418.9m (1374.3ft).

Le Tour de France 2014: Le Grand Départ Leeds, Le Tour Yorkshire, England - 5th July, 2014
Le Tour de France 2014 began on the 5th July, 2014 at 11:00am in the City of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England with Le Grand Départ Leeds before stage one of Le Tour Yorkshire began from nearby Harewood House, with a West and North Yorkshire circuit ending in Harrogate.
For Le Grand Départ 230,000 flocked to Leeds city centre to see the cyclists and support teams process by.
This film features images from the day, beginning at 09:30am and finishing at around 12:00pm. It highlights the art and culture in celebration of Le tour, including yellow jerseys on statues and a yellow phonebox. There are extensive crowd and street shots including outside Leeds Town Hall, near Leeds General Infirmary, Millennium Square, outside of the Civic Hall, Westgate, Great George Street, Albion Street and finally on the Headrow in front of the Barrel Man on Dortmund Square where the procession of support workers, emergency services, the peloton of riders and the team buses all pass.
This was a superb event, and a fantastic promotion for Leeds and Yorkshire, the people of this region did themselves and Le Tour very, very proud. Tres Bon!
North Yorkshire Coastal Walk - Scarborough-Scalby Mills to Cloughton Wyke round
Our video is a guided walk in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. We start with a wander around Scarborough's South and North Bays which are separated by a rocky headland on which stands the historic 12th century Scarborough Castle. We also visit Peasholme Park and The Sands complex. Our walk starts at Scalby Mills at the north end of North Bay near the Sea Life Centre and walk the Cleveland Way along the top of the cliffs to Cloughton Wyke and return on the Old Railway and Cycle Path.This is a moderate walk with a few steep inclines and declines along the cliffs which is mainly grassy paths. The old dismantled railway line is easy walking on a good level track. The North and South Bays are mainly level pavements. It is steep up into the town centre and up to the castle.
The walk only is approx 8.75 miles allow at least 3¼ hours using OS Explorer Map OL27, North York Moors Eastern Area. Add approx another 5 miles to walk from Scalby Mills into Scarborough's North and South Bays and back.
