HIDDEN GEMS IN MICHIGAN:/// Portland, Michigan
This week were pleasantly surprised by our detour to the laid back, charming town of Portland, Michigan!
We had other plans… but a bout of bad weather enticed us to make the snap decision to quickly get off the highway…It was The Hall Family vs. Mother Nature!
A quick Google search recommended checking out the beautiful Portland RiverWalk. We had to find indoor entertainment in hopes that the storm would pass. We found a cute little 12 lane bowling alley and restaurant called The Wagon Wheel! We appreciated that the bumpers automatically came down when they boys were ready to bull and rescinded when it was our turn.
The rain finally started to subside and we asked the super helpful staff at the Wagon Wheel who had the best ice cream in town. There are a few options but when we heard Chocolate Moose had home made ice cream- we were sold!
By the time we finished the rain completely stopped. We checked out the laid back, charming downtown area and park- but it was still pretty wet.
Jonah actually got so wet we ran out of dry clothes for him and we had to find a place to buy him new clothes- the only place we could find was Goodwill- who had surprisingly great deals!
The views in this town are beautiful so we definitely wanted to find a place where we could enjoy the rivers, which led us to Fabiano's River House Bar & Grill- the patio was closed but the pizza was pretty good!
I am so glad that we stumbled upon the cute town of Portland and can’t wait to go back!

SpotTheScotts: Bear Cave RV Park Review! ~ Thousand Trails ~ Buchanan, Michigan! {#287}
We have stayed two lovely weeks at Bear Cave RV Park in Buchanan, Michigan. This is the nicest Thousand Trails park we've stayed at thus far (although most have been nice, some tend to be a bit run down and this is the nicest kept we have seen.) Besides being lush and peaceful, there is a lot to do right at the park itself. Swimming, games, canoeing/kayaking, walking/biking nice trails and even a cave tour. We have found TONS of things to do within an hour in every direction... too many to even get to them all in this trip. This park has all the amenities you need from full hookup sites to water/electric sites right on the river, dump station and potable water fill, laundry facilities, washrooms/showers, swimming pool, a large hall for events near the pool and a huge clubhouse with gathering space, movie space, arcade games and pool/air hockey. We really enjoy this park and hope you will, too!

Great Getaways: Fall Color Tour - West Branch, MI
clip from Great Getaways television program #746 Rifle River Recreation Area West Branch, MI
Travel Planner -
The Hills of Ogemaw County are known for their breathtaking beauty when it comes to fall colors. So even our trip from town to the recreation area was a fantastic autumn color tour. Trees ablaze in gold, reds and orange give way to the splendor of the hills. The landscape was a real surprise and I can understand why people would make this trip just to travel through the Ogemaw Hills.

Our RV park is located just a few miles from downtown Ludington and the coastline. Vacation Station is a full-hook up resort with 18 ft wide concrete sites featuring a fire pit and picnic table at each. Aside from 20/30/50 amp electricity, water, sewer and cable television at every site, WiFi is also available throughout our park. The front office, including our convenient store, is open and available to provide a variety of goods and supplies one might need when away from home. While you're on the road, you shouldn't have to worry about where the post office is -- instead, keep in touch without the hassle by dropping off any outgoing mail at our office and we'll take care of the rest.
Should you need anything after the office is closed, each night there is a host site designated to assist you with any concerns you may have so you can rest easy knowing we're available any hour, any day.
Our restrooms, showers and laundry facility are open 24 hours a day and cleaned numerous times a day for your comfort.
Enjoy our family-oriented themed weekends, including kid's crafts and special activities. Activity possibilities are endless -- from watermelon eating contests to bounce houses and more, our friendly staff will find a way to get the whole family involved. Take a break from breakfast grilled over a fire with our weekly all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, including sausage, juice and coffee, each Sunday.
During the week, there's still plenty to do at Vacation Station. Take a dip in our heated pool or hot tub, share fishing tips and reel in memories at our catch and release pond, take a cruise around the park with our banana bikes, test your skill in the game room or spend some time at our newly built playground. There are basketballs, volleyballs, horseshoes, croquet mallets and ladder ball available in the office for any guests staying at our park, as well as a basketball court, volleyball net and horseshoe pit to play on. Rainy days are no threat to entertainment at Vacation Station as there is a book exchange, magazines and plenty of board games in the office for our guests. Your options are only limited by the amount of time you can spend with us.
Full-time RVers will be pleased to know that seasonal sites are available from April 1st to October 31st. Once you've sampled the third coast of America, there's no doubt you'll want to stay with us as long as possible. Watch the colors change through the season and form long-lasting friendships while staying with us.
Both weekend campers and those interested in staying seasonally can take advantage of our On/Off Service. We can store your camper at our park for as long as you like; we'll even take care of placing it onto your site when coming to visit Ludington and pulling it off once you leave as often as you please. Free yourself of your tow vehicle and leave the parking to us.
