The Sanctuary of Santa María Magdalena is a religious building located in Novelda , Alicante province ( Valencian Community , Spain ) and was built on a project designed by the noveldense engineer José Sala Sala, inspired by Catalan modernism since, very young, was sent by his parents to study in Catalonia . The building bears a certain resemblance to the Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family of Antonio Gaudí . It has the shape of a jug, symbolizing the jug that the saint carried from the balm to Jesus. This original form is also unique in the world.
Its construction, begun in 1918 , required three phases (one of them being paralyzed), to terminate the work in 1946 . Different resources were used to finance the works, such as the zarzuela lyrical galaxies where the orchestra director Asterio Mira, the baritone noveldo Eduardo Mateo-Quirant and his wife, the tiple Josefina Landete (both parents of Paloma Mairant ) intervened. others.
In the main facade stand out two lateral towers of 25 m. of height culminated by a stone cross, that also is in the dome and on the upper arcs of the facade. The decorative motifs have antecedents in the medieval styles, baroque and in the own nature. These influences led the author to combine pebbles from the Vinalopó river , polychrome tiles , reddish bricks, masonry , etc., which are reflected throughout the exterior of the building.
The interior of the sanctuary is composed of a rectangular central nave with two adjoining lateral spaces; In the background, in the apse , is the dressing room of Santa Maria Magdalena , patroness of Novelda, and behind the altar you can admire a beautiful painting attributed to Gastón Castelló . Since the end of the twentieth century, the incorporation of an organ built entirely of marble , the work of the innovative organ makerand artist Ivan Larrea, who will become the only one in the world of these characteristics. The Sanctuary of Santa Maria Magdalena de Novelda is the place many couples choose to marry and baptize their children. It is a place with a lot of history for the wine-growers, since it is also celebrated there the choice of grapes that will accompany Santa Maria Magdalena in the procession of 22 of July, day of the patron saint. It is also interesting to note that, for several years, they resided in a building next to the Sanctuary, the Dominican nuns. Three years ago they marched to another region of Spain. A sightseeing overview on the city of Novelda at the Costa Blanca in Spain. Novelda is widely known for its saffron and marble industry, as well as the Sanctuary of Maria Magdalena just outside of the town. The sanctuary looks very much like Gaudi Sagrada Familia in Barcelona , as it has been designed by a student of him. Really worth visiting.

The Arciprestal and Insigne Basilica minor of Santa Maria or Arciprestal Church of Our Lady of the Assumption , is located the place of the Eucharistic Congress of the city of Elche ( Valencian Community , Spain ) and constructed in baroque style between 1672 and 1784 and in her participated several architects among whom was the Castilian Jaime Bort and Meliá , author of the baroque façade of the cathedral of Murcia .
The works began in 1672 under the direction of Francisco Verde , succeeding him Pedro Quintana and Ferrán Fouquet . It is a good example of Spanish Baroque. This building presents different architectural styles, from the Italianate baroque of the main front, the rococo of the other fronts and the girola, the neoclassic of the interior, to the medieval reminiscences.
In the Middle Ages was the Muslim mosque in this site that at that time was one of the ends of the old Vila Murada . When the king James I of Aragon conquered the city in 1265 , it consecrated the mosque under the invocation of Santa Maria. On its ruins was constructed a first Christian temple of Gothic style that was demolished and for the third time the present one was constructed.
This church has the great tradition of celebrating in it the Misteri d'Elx (Misterio de Elche) choral work in ancient Valencian that is represented during the days 14 and 15 of August of each year by virtue of a papal bull granted by His Holiness the Pope Urban VIII .
On February 20, before the civil war was partially destroyed, being restored years later by the architect Antonio Serrano Peral . In the fire that suffered at the hands of republicans in February 1936 the original image of the Virgin of the Assumption disappeared, under whose dedication the temple is consecrated, and later replaced by a new one, the work of the Valencian sculptor José Capuz . Although the legend tells that a group of religious could hide the image of Our Lady so that it was not destroyed. This version of the facts loses credibility when the original image has not yet been found.
