UAW BLACK LAKE - Area Attractions
uawblacklake.com
The Center's prime location is a gateway to some of the region's most popular area attractions.
Onaway is a sportsman's paradise and a nature lover's dream. The area is home to thousands of acres of northern Michigan state forest recreation areas, fishing, hunting and inland lakes. The city is surrounded by thousands of acres of Mackinaw State Forest, and the scenery is breathtaking. Watching leaves change as the seasons fold one after the other, is a worth the time spent at the Center.
Onaway is an all-season, inside and outdoor, recreation destination. It's also just a short jaunt from Burt Lake, Mullet Lake and Michigan's popular Inland Waterways. Onaway is only five miles from its namesake's state park and Black Lake, which is teeming with excellent walleye, bass and perch fishing.
Located in the northeast, lower-peninsula of Michigan, Onaway sits on the western edge of Presque Isle County and is just a short drive from Black Mountain State Forest Recreation Area, Ocqueoc Falls, Petoskey, Charlevoix, the Mackinac Bridge and so many other area attractions. It is 18 miles east of I-75, 22 miles west of Lake Huron, 45 miles southeast of the Straits of Mackinac and 265 miles north of Detroit.
The Black Lake Golf Club is a premier course designed by architect Rees Jones.
While many courses have two or three so-called signature holes that are worthy of brochure status, every hole at Black Lake Golf Club could easily be on the cover of a magazine promoting the course.
That is one reason it was ranked 34th in Golf Digest's
100 Greatest Public Courses in America in May 2009 and ninth in the Best Value
category.
Night Life
Our guests are encouraged to visit the Center's onsite local watering hole, Mazey's. Whether you just want to enjoy a nice cold adult beverage, or participate and/or host in a sing-along in the bar's classroom -- that's right, every inch of Black Lake is educational! -- or dance the night away during the DJ-hosted nights, Mazey's door is open to guests and visitors. Limited shuttle bus service is available to guests for transport. Leave the driving to us. We've got you covered.

Michigan State Parks - With the Beerbellied Travelers - Park Travel Review
We had not gotten to Michigan yet in our adult lives. We were excited to go hike with our friends Dana and Eileen of the Beerbellied Travelers. Find them here:
They planned an epic camping and hiking State Park Adventure for us. By the end we sure felt like we knew more of the meaning of #PureMichigan.
We visited 4 State Parks on our Michigan road Trip. They were: Onaway State Park, Cheboygan State Park, Michilimackinac State Park, and Petoskey State Park. Each had something new and unique for us to see. We had the best time with our friends and can't wait to see them again!

Let's Visit P. H. Hoeft State Park
Located near Rogers City, MI, Hoeft State Park offers some beautiful hiking trails, and campground, and a nice beach along Lake Huron. In the video, I walk on some of the trails, and I head over to Lake Huron where the breeze is quite nice.

Michigan State Parks 100: Outdoor Adventure Center
Can a state park be indoors? Yes, it can! One of Michigan's 103 state parks, and one of three in the city of Detroit, is the Outdoor Adventure Center. It's designed to bring all the natural environments in Michigan together so kids living in the state's largest city can get a taste of what they might find when they head out across the Great Lakes State. We found it to be a nice break from winter's chill and a fun place to take a family. #hikecampgo #mistateparks100

▶︎ Ranger Review: Seattle Sports Explorer 10L Dry Bag & E-Merse R/S Go Pack at Platte River Campground
Campground Review: Having been to over 45 national park campgrounds now, Platte River Campground is one of our new favorites! Wow, what a beauty! This large and beautifully wooded campground has spacious sites, a paved road throughout the campground, extremely clean bathrooms and free showers, and multiple lakes and rivers which lead to the greater Lake Michigan. Most sites have electricity (which is quite rare for national park campgrounds), all have picnic tables and fire rings, and water spigots are scattered throughout the campground. It can accommodate everything from tents to very large RV’s. There is even a unique firewood vending truck which allows you to get wood whenever you want it! There are multiple boat ramps/put-ins for canoes, tubes, kayaks, and small fishing boats all along the Platte River and a larger boat ramp at the river’s entrance to Lake Michigan. The gorgeous day use area (where the larger boat ramp is located) is filled with picnic tables, benches, BBQ grills, and a bathroom and changing area, as well as canoe rentals and a shuttle service. In addition to camping and paddling, there are nearby hiking trails, an excellent bike path, and the famous Sleeping Bear Dunes are a short drive away.

Product Review: As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I was able to test the Explorer 10L Dry Bag and E-Merse R/S Go Pack from Seattle Sports while camping and paddling at the Platte River campground in Michigan. We used these dry bags while paddling on the Platte River and Lake Michigan.
What I like most about these bags:
1. The material is heavy and all seams are sealed, both bags should live up to their water-resistant claims.
2. Each bag has comfortable and convenient carrying straps, which accommodate many uses, probably the best use for each will be for stand-up paddle boarding.
3. The Go-Pack has a see -through vinyl window which helps identify what is where....

Rogers City is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Presque Isle County. The city is adjacent to Rogers Township, but is politically independent.
Rogers City is located on Lake Huron and is home to two salmon fishing tournaments. The world's largest open pit limestone quarry, the Port of Calcite, is located within the city limits and is one of the largest shipping ports on the Great Lakes.
The freighter, SS Carl D. Bradley, home port at Rogers City, sank in Lake Michigan on November 18, 1958. There were two survivors while 33 lost their lives. Of the 33 victims, 26 of the deceased were from Rogers City, with the others from nearby towns. Fiftieth anniversary memorial activities took place in 2008.
Rogers City Municipal Marina has nearly 100 slips, most on floating docks. There is a fishing platform on the east wall for breakwater fishing.
P. H. Hoeft State Park has one mile (1.6 km) of sandy shoreline and 301 acres (1.22 km2) on Lake Huron. Hiking trails run through the forest and along the lake. There is a 142 site campground. The day use area has a playground, picnic sites, and a beach. It was one of the fourteen original Michigan state parks, and the land was donated by lumber baron Paul H. Hoeft on January 2, 1922. It is a 'four season park' offering camping even in the winter.

WHAK-AM 960 is the heritage station in Rogers City. All three local stations licensed to Rogers City now broadcast out of studios in Alpena, leaving Rogers City without a truly locally based station of its own.
The local newspaper, the Presque Isle County Advance, has served the area since 1878. The Advance made statewide news itself in February 2006, when it fell victim to a fire which also destroyed Big D's Pizza. Both businesses recovered, with Big D's moving to a new location and the Advance moving into an efficient new building on the same location as the old one 10 months later.
The Alpena News is also widely available in the area.
Ocqueoc Falls | Michigan Waterfalls | Lower Peninsula
Ocqueoc Falls is the only waterfall in the lower peninsula of Michigan. Well, it's the only recognized waterfall in the lower peninsula of Michigan. Ocqueoc Falls is located not far from Rogers City, Michigan and is a handicap accessible waterfall. Michigan waterfalls are all so beautiful! I plan to add more of them to this site! Let us know where you want us to travel to next!
