Millennium Park is one of the nation’s largest urban parks. It was very attractive to drive up to and through and is only a short distance from the John Ball Zoo. The lake is 100 acres and includes 6 acres of sandy beach and a large splashpad area. The lake at Millennium Park was once a sand and gravel quarry and is mainly spring-fed by natural groundwater.
The DeVos Family Boathouse - this is where you rent the kayaks, paddle boats, canoes, row boats and stand up paddle boards. There are also restrooms, lockers, a concession stand, and picnic tables here. Boathouse hours are 10 AM to 7 PM in the summer and 10 AM to 6 PM in the Spring and Fall. Rental rates are typically between $5 and $8 an hour for the first hour, and $3 to $6 for each additional hour.
You’ll get to kayak under a bridge and see a small, working oil well. These old, rusty wells are said to have drawn around 20 millions of barrels of crude since the 1930s - some from limestone 1,900 feet under the Walker Oil Field. According to a MLive article, in 2007, “the Walker Oil Field's 307 operating wells produced more than 63,000 barrels -- an average of about a half-barrel per day, according to a Press analysis of state records.”
