Iroquois Indian Museum, Howe Cave, New York
This is a little walk-around video I did while at the Iroquois Indian Museum yesterday (as I am uploading this). Many years ago I got a PhD in Anthropology. I was an archaeologist, or as we Americanists spell it, an archeologist. My areas of special interest were the archeology of the Americas (especially the early stuff) and North American Indian cultures.
In any event, I have wanted to see this little museum for a long time but either I was busy on the best days to visit because they were hosting events, like the primitive skills workshop and others, or when there were no events being hosted, I figured it was just too long a drive from Long Island to Howe Cave for a quick visit.
SO, when my wife and I were planning a stay at The Hedges lodge on Blue Mountain Lake in the Adirondacks and neither of us were anxious to get back home after that stay, I decided that on the way home we'd book a room at Howe Caverns Motel, do the candlelight tour of the caverns in the evening, get up in the morning, have breakfast and visit the museum. Folks, if you're within 200ish mies of Howe Cave, NY and especially if you have kids, this is a GREAT two day trip and, if you want to spend the day at one of their events, a great two night trip. Drive up, visit caverns by evening (Do the candlelight tour!), spend the next day at the event, and drive home the following day. Incidentally, the museum is SO inexpensive. $8. a person and HALF that if you stay at the Howe Cavern Motel. Ask for the half price ticket to the museum.
