The name of Steinbach is translated from German as Stony Brook and was first settled by Plautdietsch-speaking Mennonites from the Russian Empire in 1874.     Mennonite Heritage Village is a museum in Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada. It is a major tourist attraction in the area, as thousands of visitors visit it each year. It has an indoor facility documenting the history of German speaking Mennonites from Russia and an outdoor village, which is most famous for its windmill. The museum includes two monuments originally erected in Russia to commemorate the centennial of Chortitza and honor the two Mennonite leaders, Jacob Hoeppner and Johann Bartsch, who chose the site and accompanied the first colonists.

    Abraham Dueck Penner was a businessman and politician in Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada. He served as Steinbach's mayor from 1971 to 1980.Penner was born on a farm just outside of Steinbach to a Russian Mennonite family in 1910 and established Steinbach's first Dodge dealership in 1937. He coined the phrase The Automobile City and promoted Steinbach as a center for the automobile trade in Manitoba. He was also instrumental in starting the Steinbach Fly-in Golf Course. Penner served on Steinbach city council from 1947-1957 and was elected mayor in 1971. A large park in his name was established in Steinbach. Steinbach's Abe's Hill is also named in his honour.
