Xativa Castle - Valencia Tourist Places - Places to visit in Valencia Spain
Thanks to its strategic location perched high above Xàtiva on the sierra del Castell hill, this twin fortress has been the scene and spectator of a host of battles. Gradually expanded and fortified by the successive cultures that have inhabited these lands, the castle is divided into the Castell Menor, which sits atop Iberian and Roman remains, and the Castell Major. It already featured in Hannibal’s campaigns and the Al-Ándalus period, and subsequently assumed importance for the Kingdom of Valencia in the wars against Castile, the Revolt of the Brotherhoods and the War of the Spanish Succession. It was also used to as a prison for illustrious captives.
The castle forms the highest point of the defensive walls that once encircled early mediaeval Xàtiva. Despite its Iberian and Roman roots, most of castle walls and towers preserved today are of Islamic or Gothic origin. Its imposing architecture renders the castle one of the city’s finest gems, and it has been declared a Cultural Heritage Site. No visit to Xàtiva is complete without a trip around this fortress, with stunning views over the city and its surroundings.

Tuesday afternoons: admission free (except on public holidays).
Tourist train (ascent to the castle)
Two 20-minute tours of the old quarter and ascent to the castle.
Departures: 12:30 and 16:30.
Includes an hour to visit the castle.
Tourist train tickets: €4.20.
Tickets for groups over 25 cost €3.80 per person if previously booked at the tourist office.

City of Arts and Sciences
An entertainment-based cultural and architectural complex. The most important modern tourist destination in the city. Situated at the end of the former riverbed of the river Turia.
Llotja de la Seda
A late Valencian Gothic style civil building. Built between 1482 and 1548. One of the principal tourist attractions in the city. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
Valencia Bioparc
A 10-hectare (25-acre) zoo. Has a large collection of African fauna. The concept of the zoo consists of immersing visitors into the animals' habitat and not vice versa.
Mercado Central
A public market. It is generally considered one of the oldest European markets still running. A popular location for tourists and locals alike.
L'Oceanogràfic
An oceanarium situated in the east of the city. Opened on 14 February 2003. The largest complex of its type in Europe. There are 45,000 animals of 500 different species including fish, mammals, birds, reptiles and invertebrates.
Torres de Serranos
One of the twelve gates that were found along the old medieval city wall. Considered one of Valencia's most iconic buildings and is one of the best conserved monuments in the city.
Plaza de Toros de Valencia
A bullring currently used for bull fighting. The stadium holds 10,500 people since 2010. It was built in 1841. Situated next to the North Station. Was built between 1850 and 1860. The architect was Sebastian Monleon.
Ibiza
An island in the Mediterranean Sea, 79 kilometres (49 miles) off the coast of the city. Well known for its summer club scene which attracts very large numbers of tourists.
Valencia Cathedral
A Roman Catholic parish church. Was consecrated in 1238 by the first bishop of Valencia after the Reconquista, Pere d'Albalat. One of the supposed Holy Chalices in the world is revered in one of this cathedral's chapels.
Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe
An important visitor attraction. Opened on 13 November 2000. It is over 40,000 square meters in area and resembles the skeleton of a whale. Everything in the museum is graphically displayed.

Impressions of Valencia and Xativa
Valencia was founded as a Roman colony in 138 BC. The city is situated on the banks of the Turia, on the east coast of the Iberian peninsula, fronting the Gulf of Valencia of Mediterranean Sea. Its historic center is one of the largest in Spain, with approximately 169 acres; this heritage of ancient monuments, diverse scenic sites and cultural attractions makes Valencia one of the country's most popular tourist destinations for Spaniards and world travellers alike.
Among its most representative monuments are the Valencia Cathedral, the Torres de Serranos, the Torres de Quart, the Llotja de la Seda (declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996), and the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències (City of Arts and Sciences), an entertainment-based cultural and architectural complex designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela. The Museu de Belles Arts de València houses a large collection of paintings from the 14th-18th centuries, including works by Velázquez, El Greco, and Goya, also an important series of engravings by Piranesi. The Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (Valencian Institute of Modern Art) offers both permanent collections and temporary exhibitions of contemporary art and photography.
Valencia is integrated into an industrial area on the Costa del Azahar (Orange Blossom Coast). Its main festival, the Falles, is known worldwide, while the traditional Spanish dish, paella, originated here.
Castle of Xàtiva is a castle located in the city of Xàtiva near Valencia, Spain. It is strategically located on the ancient roadway Via Augusta leading from Rome across the Pyrenees and down the Mediterranean coast to Cartagena and Cádiz. In 1092, the castle fell into the occupation of the Almoravids Dynasty who were expelled in an uprising that took place in 1145. During this uprising, the castle was besieged by the Governor of Valencia, Marwan Abd-al-Aziz. In 1171, the Castle finally fell, along with the rest of the Levante coast, into the hands of the Almohades. King James I of Aragon began his crusade there in the summer of 1239 finally capturing Xátiva on 22 May 1244 following a five month siege. After submitting to the Christian monarch and signing the Treaty of Jativa the Moors handed over the smaller nearby Castle to James I, while they were allowed to continue occupying the larger castle for another two years based on the terms of the treaty.

Albufera derives from the Arabic word small sea.
Valencia’s Albufera region is one of the largest and most valuable coastal wetlands to the Valencian community. In 1986 it was declared a Natural Park. Albufera plays an extremely important role towards the environment as many species nearing extinction habitat its lands, such as the toothed carp fish.
The natural biodiversity of the nature reserve allows a great variety of flora and fauna to thrive and be observed year-round. Though once a saltwater lagoon, dilution due to irrigation and canals draining into the estuary and the sand bars increasing in size had converted it to freshwater by the seventeenth century.

Xàtiva is a town in eastern Spain, in the province of Valencia, on the right (western) bank of the river Albaida and at the junction of the Valencia–Murcia and Valencia Albacete railways. During the Al-Andalus Islamic era, Arabs brought the technology to manufacture paper to Xàtiva. In the 12th century, Xàtiva was known for its schools, education, and learning circles.
