Hidden Lake Overlook Trail
Highlights of a rainy morning hike to the overlook of Hidden Lake at Logan Pass, Glacier National Park, Montana (1.35 miles, elevation gain of 1,400 feet) in August, 2017. Along the trail we pass the blooming wildflower meadow of Hanging Gardens, the Garden Wall, cross the Continental Divide and at the overlook the view faces Bearhat Mountain. Watch for one of the many ground squirrels.
This is a busy trail and the parking at Logan Pass can be tricky. An early start is best.

The walk starts at Logan goes to the chalet and back down to the road. Lots of mountain goats, big home sheep
The Highline Trail - Glacier National Park, Montana
Views from the Highline Trail from Logan Pass to Goat Haunt/Waterton including all side trails like the Grinnell Glacier Overlook and Ahern Pass, Sue Lake, Swiftcurrent Fire Lookout and the Loop. This trail is mostly above treeline and it is very common to see wildlife including bighorn sheep, mountain goats, marmots, ground squirrels and sometimes grizzly bears. The trail follows the garden wall and it is full of flowers esp in July. Just under 8 miles in from Logan Pass is the Granite Park Chalet. Campsites along the way include Granite Park, Fifty Mountain, and Kootenai Lakes. The last is a great place to see moose and different species of birds.
Escape to Montana's Glacier Park
From the original press release: An original music score provides the background as Chet Huntley narrates this panorama of ever-changing, never-ending scenic magnificence. Lake MacDonald, with its ice-blue waters against a mountain setting, is but one of 200 glacial lakes to be found in the million-acre wonderland of Glacier Park. Camera buffs will glory in the brilliant display of fields of mountain wildflowers, the cascading waterfalls, the grandeur of forests thick with greenery, the sheer cliffs that seem to touch the sky...fishermen delight in their catch as they wade, hip-boot deep, in the rushing waters...and hikers, as they travel almost 1,000 miles of trails, find travelling companions among grazing mountain sheep and goats! And four wheels drive everyone along the spectacular east-west 50 miles of Going-to-the-Sun Road, which crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, there to visit the towering Garden Wall! Glacier Park...truly an all-year-'round WONDERLAND! Produced in 1972. (collection MOV 0099)

On Trail in Glacier National Park
I don't remember the proper name of the trail but it's the one that runs basically east-west along the Garden Wall, starting at the Divide. Instead of video I took still photos and recorded the sound of the rock underfoot as I hiked. Grizzlies were active; there was scat on the trail in two places but I spared you having to look at that in this slide show.
Start of the Highline Trail in Glacier National Park in Montana
I did the 16-mile roundtrip hike of the Highline Trail in Glacier National Park in Montana from the start to the Granite Park Chalet and back. I also did the side trail to the Grinnell Glacier Overlook.

Our Itinerary:
Day 1 - #pitamakanpass and #dawsonpass
This hike was absolutely incredible, a great way to kick off our trip! We broke our record for longest day hike ever, and had a BLAST doing it!
Day 2 - Upper #twomedicinelake & #twinfalls
Another great hike, this one takes you by an incredible double waterfall and ends at the BEAUTIFUL Upper Two Medicine Lake!
Day 3 - #avalanchelake & #trailofthecedars
Probably the busiest of all of these hikes, but with good reason. Avalanche Lake is SO SO pristine and calm!
Day 4 - #bowmanlake & #numaridge lookout
This is the furthest West we'll go, and the most remote hike of all 9! Numa Ridge is epic, but it is a GRIND to get to!
Day 5 - West #lakemcdonald
No trip to Glacier is complete without a stop at Lake McDonald. A great way to see this lake is by hiking the West side and finishing with an ice cream cone in Apgar Village!
Day 6 - #hiddenlake and #goingtothesunroad
If the Going to the Sun Road is open, you drive it! And when you do, stop at Logan Pass for the Hidden Lake hike! You won't regret it.
Day 7 - #crackerlake
We made it to Many Glacier! 3 of our 4 favorite hikes, starting with Cracker Lake and the most blue milky water we have seen up to this point! And we saw a mountain goat and moose at the top!
Day 8 - #iceberglake
There are literally icebergs in this lake. Everywhere! And this is in Grizzly territory, so be prepared.
Day 9 - #grinnelllake & #grinnellglacier
Our favorite hike of our entire time in Glacier! Grinnell is SO SO SO COOL!

Hiking to Hidden Lake - Logan Pass, Glacier National Park, Montana
One of the most popular hikes in Glacier National Park is the Hidden Lake Trail that begins on the west side of the Logan Pass Visitor Center.
It's about 2.7 miles to the edge of Hidden Lake (5.4 miles round trip), but most visitors only cover half that distance, turning around after taking in the outstanding views at the Hidden Lake Overlook. The views all along the trail are great, and feature Clements Mountain and other peaks, the Garden Wall, wildlife and Hidden Lake itself.
It's a bit of a climb to the overlook, about a 500-foot gain. Then the trail drops almost 800 feet on the way to the lake - of course, you'll have to hike back up on your return. So it is a moderately difficult trail, especially for folks not used to hiking at higher elevations.
Wildflowers are common in the summer. As are mountain goats. I came across some bighorn sheep on one hike here. And as I confirmed the last time I made this hike, snow is possible at any time during the year.
The Photos (in order)
C14A1325 - Early in the hike the Garden Wall ridge is a featured view; the red rock in the foreground was once an ancient mudflat, evidence of the amount of geological uplift that has occurred in the region
C14A1377 - The trail passes a small alpine pond
C14A1345 - As the trail approaches the viewpoint, Hidden Lake comes into view
C14A1364 - Hikers aren't the only ones who enjoy the view of Hidden Lake; a mother mountain goat and her kid are taking in the view, too; the mountain goats here have gotten a little too used to hikers here, so they are a common site along the trail; I came across a handful of bighorn sheep along the trail the first time I hiked it (wildlife can be unpredictable and aggressive, especially if they sense a potential threat to their young)
Most visitors return to the parking area after enjoying the views from the overlook. You can double the length of your hike if you continue on down to the shore of Hidden Lake.
Because of ice on the trail, I skipped that portion of the trail the last time I was here, so the following pictures are from two earlier visits to the park.
M03A0060 - The different colors of the rock caught my eye along this stretch of the hike
W94A1283 - Another view of Hidden Lake
W94A1293 - Some mountain goats greeted me when I reached the shore of Hidden Lake
M03A0070 - A view of Hidden Lake from its shore; the water is quite clear - and quite cold

On Grinnell Glacier in Glacier National Park in Montana
I stood atop one of the last remaining glaciers, Grinnell Glacier, in Glacier National Park in Montana. The serenity, tranquility, and beauty of it all was quite captivating and enthralling!
