Canterbury is a region of New Zealand, located in the central-eastern South Island. The region covers an area of 44,508 square kilometres , and is home to a population of 624,000 .The region in its current form was established in 1989 during nationwide local government reforms. The Kaikoura District joined the region in 1992 following the abolition of the Nelson-Marlborough Regional Council. Christchurch, the South Island's largest city and the country's third-largest urban area, is the seat of the region and home to 65 percent of the region's population. Other major towns and cities include Timaru, Ashburton, Rangiora and Rolleston.

1. Roundhill Ski Area Lake Tekapo
Roundhill Ski Area is a family owned and run ski area in Canterbury, New Zealand, near the town of Lake Tekapo, 1.5 hours from Timaru and 3 hours from both Christchurch & Queenstown. The main runs are accessed by a 1.2 kilometre long T-bar and a shorter T-bar . 2010 saw the installation of a 1.5 km long rope tow rising 630 metres to the Richmond Ridge to give the field 783 metres of vertical drop overall, the largest in New Zealand. This opened the field up to advanced skiers and boarders. The Heritage Express is reportedly the longest rope tow in the world. The ski area caters primarily to beginner and intermediate skiers with extensive use of two snow grooming machines. 2. Mount Dobson Ski Area Fairlie
Mount Dobson is a ski resort in the South Island of New Zealand. Located 2.25 hours from Christchurch and 3 hours from Queenstown, it claims an easy access road, the highest car park of any ski resort in New Zealand, and the earliest start to the season in 2006. It features a chair lift, a T-bar and a beginner's ski tow, serving 14 trails over an area of 400 hectares. The resort caters primarily at skiers of intermediate ability, with a 25/50/25 breakdown of beginner/intermediate/advanced slopes. The resort is situated in a 3 kilometre wide treeless bowl, facing south west between Fairlie and Tekapo. Craigieburn is the name of a settlement and several geographic features in northwest Canterbury, in New Zealand's South Island. The Craigieburn Range of mountains is located on the south banks of the Waimakariri River, south of Arthur's Pass. The Craigieburn Valley Ski Area is located on its slopes, as is the Craigieburn Forest Park. The ski slopes are within an hour and a half from Christchurch New Zealand. The small Lake Hawdon lies immediately to the west of Craigieburn.

Porters, is a commercial ski resort just over an hour's drive west from Christchurch, in the South Island of New Zealand. Originally functioning as a club skifield, it has one beginner magic carpet, one platter tow, one chairlift and three t-bars. The difficulty of the slopes is distributed as 15% beginner, 35% intermediate and 50% advanced. Modern grooming equipment is used, and snowmaking facilities operate along the main pistes along the chairlift. Washpen Falls is a true hidden gem of the Canterbury region and a Canterbury must-do! Washpen Falls is found just outside of Methven and involves and 2-hour loop walk through some of the most diverse landscape and sights in New Zealand.

Washpen Falls is a walk on private land with a small entry fee but it’s worth it to see this rugged volcanic canyon rich in Maori history, native forest, exotic forest, lava caves, lava boulders, birdlife, waterfalls and even a lagoon with a rowing boat. For one of the best walks in the South Island, check out Washpen Falls.

The waterfall is only a small highlight in what is one of the most diverse Methven walks. If you are looking for walks in Methven, Washpen Falls is worth considering.
