Summer steam excursions, far from being a distant memory from my youth are still one of the best ways to sample a trip to the seaside. Saphos Trains along with other operators have tapped into the convenience of a trip to Kingswear on the Dartmouth Steam Railway where there is a choice of beach or river destinations and convenient servicing and turning of the loco. I have put together some clips captured from two weekends where luckily the weather conditions were similar and shown them in route order. Picking up the train at Starcross I had to do a lot of sound editing as the local bikers were out in force and the footbridge is still bouncing with the heavy footsteps of departing cyclists from the previous down service. Braunton rounds the bend from Powderham Church and the sight and sound of a re-built Westcountry at speed, rushing below us towards Cockwood Harbour is ample compensation. The rare circumstance of high tide at this pretty location on the down leg makes the challenge of shooting into the light a risk worth taking. Next a grab shot on my way home at Hookhills Viaduct where I just have time to stop the car and use the roof as a pan head! The return is first captured in the idyllic surroundings of Greenway on a warm summer evening, a Song-thrush provides the back-track as 34046 lazily pulls the heavy train up to Churston. Finally from Song-thrush to Oyster-catcher on the River Teign where the cloud build-up gives a sense of a peaceful early evening as Braunton hurries her train homewards to Bristol.
Steam to Wensleydale, 48151 & 35018 British India Line on The Wensleydale Railway 6th April 2019
Here's some footage of 48151 & 35018 British India Line on The Wensleydale Railway 6th April 2019. This video sees the train run double headed and top n tailed through Yorkshire at locations such as, Church Fenton x2, York, Aiskew Level Crossing (just outside Leeming Bar on the Wensleydale Railway) Thirsk & Burton Salmon, near Sherburn-in-Elmet. Unfortunately we were meant to film the tour at Newton Le Willows but due to the delays the tour did not make it to Leyburn and stayed at Bedale. This tour was meant to be hauled by Jubilees 45690 Leander & 45699 Galatea but due to both Jubilees being unavailable they were replaced by 48151 & 35018 British India Line.

60103 'Flying Scotsman' & 45699 'Galatea' light engine moves Oct 2016
October 2016 and both Flying Scotsman and Galatea were headed for Hellifield. Scotsman was on its way to York via a very roundabout route from the East Lancs while I understand Galatea was training up drivers with 2 runs between Carnforth and Hellifield.
We first see them at Long Preston and then Hellifield. As Galatea was leaving you can hear them whistling each other and there is a rare shot of 2 steam locos together at Hellifield (there are 2 stills of this at the end of the video)
The final scene is of Scotsman approaching Gargrave station south of Hellifield
45699 - Galatea, What a Birthday party....
LMS 4-6-0 Jubilee Class 45699, Galatea.
In 1964, 45699 Galatea was withdrawn from service, and sent to Dai Woodham's scrap yard at Barry to be cut up. Here she was left to rust away, and when a shunting accident left her derailed, it was simpler to cut one of the driving wheels in half rather than re-railing her. However the story of the Barry locomotives is well-known, and like most of the locomotives in store there, she was eventually rescued, and sent to Kidderminster, as a source of spare parts for sister locomotive 5690 Leander. Few seriously considered that she could ever run again...
Eventually she was moved to Tyseley, where she languished for a number of years. By 2008 she had been moved to Carnforth, where a new set of wheels was cast for her.
Finally in April 2013 she made an appearance on the main line, running under her own steam for the first time in nearly fifty years.
And here, in May 2013 is her first paying run since restoration. A private birthday party for the guy who runs The Railway Touring Company, hence why it came out of Kings Lynn.
Complicated route this, yesterday it was ECS chimney first from Carnforth to Ely where it ran round the coaches to go tender first into Kings Lynn. There it ran round to run Chimney first from Kings Lynn, where the first scene at Black Horse Drove is shot. It then ran round the stock at Ely again to go tender first to Norwich, so Shippea Hill, being after Ely is shown tender first. An interesting and varied array of Queen of Scots Heritage coaching stock was carried behind.
Class 66 Carlisle to Milford Cab Ride Via Settle & Carlisle S&C, Leeds, Castleford
We take a ride along the legendary Settle to Carlisle line with 66011 + 19 HTA wagons forming 4Z20 from Carlisle Kingmoor Network Yard to Milford West Down reception Yard. Our journey takes in some of the most stunning scenery along this picturesque route between Cumbria and Yorkshire.
Our journey starts in number 9 reception in the Down yard at Carlisle Kingmoor. From there, we take the route to Carlisle Station via the Down Goods and arrive on Goods B line in Carlisle station where we await the arrival of a Northern service to clear the branch at London Road Junction. After departing the station we head towards London Road Junction and Petteril bridge Junction before routing on to the S&C line. From here it's flat out nearly all the way to Ais Gill summit as we pass through the pristine countryside and preserved mainline stations.
From Ais Gill it's a small decent towards Garsdale then we climb again to Blea Moor passing Dent Station (The highest main line station in England at 1150 feet above sea level). New signals are visible at Blea Moor to allow trains from the newly installed Horton Quarry Junction to run-round and head south.
After emerging from Blea Moor Tunnel, it's all downhill to Settle Junction with a fierce 1-in-100 gradient. Once over Ribble Head Viaduct, we are able to coast all the way to Settle Junction allowing the gradient to increase our speed whilst ensuring we don't go over 60mph.
As we pass Settle Junction, it's back on the power for the short climb to Coniston Cold taking in the views of the semaphore signals of Hellifield and we then coast again to Skipton where we momentarily pause at Broughton Road Sidings to allow a passenger service to depart Skipton for Leeds.
It's at this point we start running under the OHLE of the Aire Valley Triangle . Even though the line speed here is 90mph, and the train may travel at 75mph it's slow progress due to long signal sections and frequent station stops for the passenger trains that are ahead of us and we continue our journey as far as Shipley on restrictive aspects most of the way whist very rarely exceeding 40mph.
As our journey takes us southbound, we pass through Keighley and get a small glimpse of the old Shipley Keighley Junction signal box that was relocated here from Shipley to preserve it. This is also the station to change for the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway.
Once clear of Shipley, we are able to crank up the power again for 75mph running as far as Kristal. Emerging from Thackley Tunnel we see the new Apperly Bridge Station (with a couple of happy enthusiasts on the Down platform) and then the new Kristal Forge station too.
Upon arrival at Whitehall Junction, the service is pathed for 35 minutes as per the schedule and then a further 10 minutes at Engine Shed Junction at Holbeck locomotive depot.
Upon clearing Engine Shed Junction, we are nonstop to Milford West Sidings via Castleford and Fairburn where, under near darkness, we arrive on the Down Reception where our service terminates today.
All required permissions were granted for the filming of this service as it holds significant historical relevance due to the semaphore signals and various intermediate signal boxes that are now part of the heritage of the world famous Settle and Carlisle line.
This service was also the last freight train to run the full length of the S&C line prior to the line closing due to a severe landslide. It is estimated that the line will reopen in late 2016 or early 2017.
18th May 2017 35018 British India Line Light engine test
Carrying the number 98818 on the smoke box and cabside and a Bodmin nameplate, 35018 British India Line ventured on to the mainline since 1964 for a light engine test run from Carnforth to Hellifield and back.
It Is seen on the outward leg running sedately through Bentham.
An overheating inside big end meant that a number of stops were made to allow it to cool down.
It is reported that it eventually reached Hellifield and ran back to Carnforth again with a few stops
