Bitsch, Swiss village with the unfortunate name
Bitsch village in the canton of Valais keeps losing the road sign that announces its name. Several have been stolen recently, perhaps because people find it amusing that such a word has to be displayed on the roadside, and want it as a jokey souvenir. Maybe they enjoy imagining residents giving their address over the phone to a female call centre agent, and having to repeat or even spell out the embarrassing name. In fact, of course, the German word ‘bitsch’ only resembles the English insult ‘bitch’, and is not a translation of it; and anyway, as you can see in my film, it is quite a nice place!
