Varese is a city in northern Italy known for its art-nouveau villas. Campo dei Fiori Regional Park is home to the 17th-century Sacro Monte di Varese complex. It includes the Via Sacra, an uphill path that passes 14 frescoed chapels on the way to a sanctuary. The baroque Estense Palace features landscaped gardens. West is Varese Lake, with a cycle path and Isolino Virginia, a small island with an archaeological park.
Varese is a city in Lombardy. Varese is a pleasant hillside town located a few kilometers from the Swiss border, with a strong tourist vocation developped at the beginning of the twentieth century. Varese offers a cozy city centre, stunning views of the namesake lake and the Alps and plenty of opportunity for outdoor and indoor activities. Not far away from Milan, Como, lake Maggiore and the major swiss cities such as Lugano, Locarno and Bellinzona, Varese is a perfect base for visiting other centres and sites in Northern Italy and Switzerland.
The area around the lake of Varese is pretty characteristic. It has a kind of flair and sense of history that tends to impress its visitors in a sense deeper than only from a touristic point of view. It has been appreciated for its beauty and uniqueness for ages. In 1817 Stendhal wrote himself about the region as an « ensemble magnifique; au coucher du soleil, nous apercevions sept lacs. Varese is small enough to get around on foot, and many of the streets are pedestrian-only. Nevertheless if you want to reach and visit towns and villages spread over the area, such as Sacro Monte and S. Ambrogio Olona, we would advise you to use the public transport network, that comprises several lines. Some are mostly within city limits (Urbani) and some are Extraurbani (crossing city limits).

The Sacro Monte di Varese (literally ‘Sacred Mount of Varese’) is one of the nine sacri monti in the Italian regions of Lombardy and Piedmont which were inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 2003. The devotional complex is located in Parco del Campo dei Fiori, a natural reserve 6km north of Varese. It consists of fourteen chapels that were constructed between 1604 and 1623. The devotional path ends at the shrine of Santa Maria del Monte, a XVI century complex whose origins go back to the V-VI century AD, as attested by the archaeological excavations in the crypt recently opened to the public.
The Lido of Schiranna is one of the most pleasant places of the lake, a few minutes from the city centre of Varese. The area has been re-evaluated and the park that you can cross is a quiet little oasis of green, with benches and shady trees, where you can safely read or sunbathe. Not far away there is a dining area with a large swimming pool for adults and children, just opposite the lake! The park is a moment of leisure and it's a really quiet and reserved place that allows you to disconnect from daily monotony.

Lucca è un comune italiano di 85.271 abitanti[2], capoluogo dell'omonima provincia in Toscana.
La città di Lucca è posta nella Toscana nord-occidentale, situata nella pianura del Valdarno inferiore, presso la sponda sinistra del fiume Serchio, a 19 m s.l.m. in una vasta pianura all'imbocco della Garfagnana, 15 km a nord-est di Pisa, dalla quale è separata dal monte Pisano.
Nata come insediamento ligure secondo alcuni storici, mentre altri ritengono che sia di origine etrusca, e sviluppatasi come città romana a partire dal 180 a.C., nel VI secolo Lucca diviene la capitale del ducato longobardo della Tuscia per poi svilupparsi nel XII secolo come Comune e poi Repubblica.
Colonia latina dal 180 a.C., Lucca contiene ancora intatte tante delle caratteristiche tipiche dei tempi lontani. L'anfiteatro, che conserva ancora la sua caratteristica forma di piazza ellittica chiusa; il foro, situato nell'attuale piazza S. Michele dominato dall'omonima chiesa romanica che evoca forti richiami al mondo classico in molti componenti architettonici. Ma la traccia romana più evidente è nelle vie del centro storico, che riflettono l'ortogonalità dell'insediamento romano impostato dal cardo e dal decumano, corrispondenti alle attuali via Fillungo-Cenami e via S. Paolino-Roma-Santa Croce. All'epoca romana risale anche la prima cinta muraria, che delimitava un'area quadrata nella quale, durante il corso dei secoli, si sono costituiti il centro del potere politico (attuale Palazzo Ducale) e il centro religioso. Nel 55 a.C. Lucca fu teatro di un incontro del primo triumvirato tra Caio Giulio Cesare Gneo Pompeo Magno e Marco Licinio Crasso dove Cesare si vide prorogare per un ulteriore quinquennio il proconsolato nelle Gallie.
Nel Congresso di Vienna venne deciso di creare il ducato di Lucca. Il 10 maggio 1815 subentra, come reggente, Maria Luisa di Borbone-Spagna, alla quale succedette Carlo Ludovico di Borbone 1824-1847. Nel 1847 divenne parte del granducato di Toscana. Nel 1860 fu infine annessa al regno di Sardegna.
Dante Alighieri incluse molti riferimenti alle grandi famiglie feudali che ebbero una grande giurisdizione con poteri amministrativi e giudiziali; Dante stesso spese molti dei suoi anni in esilio a Lucca.
Il 24 novembre 2006 ha ospitato il vertice bilaterale Italia-Francia alla presenza del Presidente del Consiglio Prodi e del Presidente della Repubblica Francese Chirac.
Toponimo [modifica]
Lucca era conosciuta come Luca dai Romani[3]. L'origine del nome secondo Silvio Pieri è incerta[4]. È stata fatta l'ipotesi di una radice celto-ligure luk, luogo paludoso[5]. Il deflusso irregolare del fiume Auser, infatti, causava molti problemi alla città, soggetta a continue alluvioni.
Il nome della città di Lucca lo troviamo citato per la prima volta[senza fonte] in una lettera che Cicerone scrive nel 46 a.C. a Bruto, all'epoca governatore della Gallia: Lucius Castronius Paetus longe princeps municipii Lucensis (Cicerone, Epistulae Ad Familiares, 13-13). Il testo di Cicerone, indicante probabilmente uno dei primi cittadini lucchesi nella storia, riporta l'etnico Lucensis (lucchese). Il nome di Lucca si trova attestato anche in Tito Livio e, per quanto riguarda le fonti greche, in Strabone (Λοῦκα, Lôuka).[3]
