Alternative Cinque Terre, Italy: Porto Venere, Lerici, Levanto
If you’ve already battled the crowds of Cinque Terre and are looking for a more tranquil side to the seaside region of Liguria, Italy, we’ve got your itinerary. Big & Small based ourselves in the larger town of La Spezia, and traveled by bus and train to six other nearby coastal villages that rival the five towns of Cinque Terre for their spectacular views, colorful houses, and fresh seafood. Join us as we walk through Porto Venere, Lerici, San Terenzo, Levanto, Bonassola, and Framura. This is our “alternative” Cinque Terre—or more like our “Sei Terre” (Six Lands)!

Places to see in ( La Spezia - Italy )
La Spezia is a port city in Liguria, Italy. Its 1800s maritime arsenal and the Technical Naval Museum, with ship models and navigational instruments, attest to the city’s seafaring heritage. The hilltop St. George’s Castle houses an archaeological museum with artifacts from prehistory to the Middle Ages. The nearby Amedeo Lia Museum exhibits paintings, bronze sculptures and illuminated miniatures in a former convent. It's an understandable oversight. Situated minutes to the east of Cinque Terre by train, and sidling up to the exquisite Lerici and Tellaro, this hard-working port town and home to Italy's largest naval base is routinely overlooked.
But it's not only an affordable place to overnight if you're heading to the Cinque Terre, it's really worthy of at least a wander – the winding streets of the old town are hugely atmospheric and there are plenty of cosy trattorias showcasing the Ligurian kitchen's finest. La Spezia's bustle peaks on 19 March, the feast day of the city's patron saint, San Giuseppe (St Joseph). Celebrations see a giant market fill the port and surrounding streets, and the naval base (off-limits the rest of the year) opens to the public.
Beaches overlooking a crystal-clear sea, spectacular views, a marvelous artistic legacy, and small villages set within green valleys, alive with ancient traditions: all this and much more await the visitor in the Province of La Spezia. One of the most wonderful stretches of the Ligurian Riviera can be found here: Golfo dei Poeti, Poets’ Gulf, named for the love that many great writers and poets have demonstrated for this land. Steep cliffs, dense pine woods, romantic coves and exceptional beaches, along with picturesque villages perched atop the bluffs, draw the coastal landscape, striking the visitor's eye with all their beauty.
Lerici, Portovenere, the Island of Palmaria and the Islets of Tino and Tinetto are the best-known destinations, with La Spezia at the Gulf's center. Eventually, the visitor arrives at one of the most beautiful scenes of Italy, the Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (together with Porto Venere) for their extraordinary relationship between man and nature, a harmonious balance that stuns the visitor.
The Cinque Terre (the Five Lands) are five villages - Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. These are places to discover one after the other, with each boasting its own natural and artistic treasures. Along the furthest stretch of La Spezia's coast lie Levanto, Bonassola, Framura and Deiva Marina, charming villages surrounded by cliffs and beaches, by green hills and the beautiful sea.
La Spezia Province, however, is not made up of its littoral alone. The interior has many hidden treasures as well. Green forests, rolling hills, wide valleys marked by the many streams, and Medieval villages unite to form astonishing landscape, filled with history and ancient traditions, removed from the noise of modern life, where people still lovingly work the land - actions reciprocated, of course, by the harvests that characterize the local cuisine.

Places to see in ( Levanto - Italy )
Levanto is a comune in the province of La Spezia in the Italian region Liguria, located about 60 kilometres southeast of Genoa and about 20 kilometres northwest of La Spezia. The town is on the coast at the end of a valley, thickly wooded with olive and pine trees. The ridges on either side of the valley thrust out into the sea as the headlands of Mesco and Levanto. The municipality forms part of the coastal district known as the Comunità Montana della Riviera Spezzina, and part of its territory is included in the Cinque Terre National Park.
In Roman times there was already a small settlement by the name of Ceula on the hills. This constituted an important nodal point due to its location. At the beginning of the 9th century, the bell tower of the present church, the Chiesa di San Siro, served as a watchtower and as a defence against dangers from the sea. From the 13th century, however, the importance of the area began to decline – this to the advantage of Levanto itself, which was expanding by the sea.
Levanto first became the feudal stronghold of the Malaspina, before passing to the Da Passano and then, in 1229, to the Republic of Genoa. In the Middle Ages, the village became a centre of commercial activity, benefiting from maritime and overland communications, the most important of the latter being the via Francigena. In the post-Medieval period, the village saw major development with the construction of the Borgo Nuovo or Stagno on the plain of the Ghiararo. This survives today and is characterised by interesting 17th and 18th century buildings. A further phase of urban development took place at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries with the opening of two thoroughfares, the present Corso Italia and Corso Roma. From 1950, the village experienced further growth culminating during the 1970s in the present townscape.
Alot to see in Levanto such as :
Medieval castle, built to defend the village and still in a state of perfect conservation.
church of Sant'Andrea (Church of Saint Andrew). An example of 13th century Ligurian Gothic style with its façade decorated in black and white bands, and a magnificent rose window surmounting the main door. The chalice of emperor Henry VII is one of its treasures, and displayed only on special occasions such as the festival of the patron saint.
Church of Santa Maria della Costa' (Church of Saint Mary of the Coast)
Villa Agnelli. Its gardens were landscaped at the beginning of the 20th century.
Piazza della Loggia, characterized by a 13th-century loggia, which in 2007 received from UNESCO the title of monument being evidence of culture and peace.
Piazza Cavour, in earlier times the inner courtyard of the Monastero delle Ordine di Santa Chiara (Monastery of the Order of St Claire). The town hall, the public library and other municipal offices are accommodated under its portico.
Festival Massimo Amfiteatrof, classical and chamber music festival dedicated to Russian born cellist Massimo Amfiteatrof. June/July - September.
Festa di San Giacomo (Feast of St James) and Festa del Mare (Festival of the Sea). 24–25 July.
Festa di Nostra Signora della Guardia Traditional band concert. 29 August.
Sagra del Gattafin (fried pastry stuffed with beets, onions, egg and grated cheese) in June.
Festa Madonna del Soccorso 1–2 July in Fontona (a little village near Levanto)

► LEVANTO 2016
A trip to Levanto, one of the famous Cinque Terre.
We went by train cause it's pretty common in this region to go to the sea in Liguria by train. Car just take too much time to get there and get back.
Levanto is one of the many places worth a visit in Liguria, a small region of Italy. Every year i go there at least one day just to hang around the sea for a while. And like me there's many other who take the train early in the morning and with a backpack go south to Liguria.
