Historical Dresden, Germany -- An Easy Day Trip from Berlin
Only a two-hour train ride from Berlin, Dresden makes for a great day trip or longer. Mostly destroyed during the war, Dresden has come back strong. From visiting the Frauenkirche to walking along the Elbe river, Dresden has a lot to offer.

I’ve had the pleasure of spending the last few weeks cruising the Baltic Sea on board P&O’s marvellous ship ‘Britannia’. One of the highlights was a trip to visit the narrow-gauge Molli Railway, near Rostock in northern Germany. This charming little railway traces its’ origins to the 1880’s, as a way of connecting Duke Fredrick Franz I’s seaside resort of Bad Heiligendamm with the racecourse at Bad Doberan (His Highness seemingly loved a flutter!). Today, it survives as a steam-worked heritage line, with the steam locomotives that work the line built in 1932 and the carriages are of similar vintage.
After seeing a train arrive at Bad Doberan (with the driver catching me off-guard with the whistle!) and seeing the loco perform its’ run-around, we set off from there and head for Heiligendamm. As you can see, the narrow gauge (2 ft 11 7/16 inch) tracks run right through the cobbled streets, picking up passengers outside shop fronts in a manner more akin to a bus, before heading along tree-lined avenues. We leave the train at Heiligendamm, just in time to see another service arrive from Keulungsborn.
All in all, it’s well worth a visit if you are visiting this part of Germany. Further information can be found at the following link:

Lost Places Belgium - The Fort
3 Jahre lang (1934-1937) bauten bis zu 2000 Mann an diesem Fort, welches zur Befestigten Stellung Lüttich I (Position Fortifée de Liège I - P.F.L. I) gehörte. Das gesamte Areal umfasst ca. 45 ha. Die Versorgungseinrichtungen und die Kriegszeiten-Kaserne befinden sich in 30m Tiefe. Die unterirdsichen Räume, sowie die 15 oberidischen Gebäude, sind durch ein 3,5 km langes Tunnelsystem miteinander verbunden.
12 Tage leistete das Fort Battice unter heftigstem Beschuss, Widerstand gegen die deutsche Invasion. 34 der ca. 750 belgischen Verteidiger fanden dabei den Tod. Während der 4-jährigen Besetzung, diente das Fort als Versuchsgelände für die Erprobung neuer Waffen, u.a. der Röchling-Granate.
Das Fort kann von März bis November, jeweils am letzten Samstag des Monats um 13.30 Uhr besichtigt werden. Helft dem Verein damit, diese einmalige Gedenkstätte zu erhalten!

The utilities and the wartime barracks are located in 30m deep. The rooms under surface, and the 15 buildings on top, beeing connected through a 3,5 km long tunnel system.
For 12 days, the fort rendered resistance against the german invasion, under heavy bombardment. 34 of 750 belgian defenders were killed. During the 4-year occupation, the fort served as a testing ground for new weapons, among others the Röchling grenade.
The fort can be visited from March to November at 13.30 clock on the last Saturday of the month. Help the club to preserve this unique memorial!

2004 Dresden Duitsland
Oorspronkelijk lagen alle stadsdelen van Dresden in wat nu de Altstadt en de Neustadt zijn. Naast de binnen de stadsmuur gelegen delen van Dresden ontstonden in de achttiende en negentiende eeuw buiten de stadsmuren voorsteden die doorgaans door de Saksische vorsten werden gebouwd en soms naar hen werden vernoemd (Friedrichstadt, Antonstadt, Johannstadt). De Antonstadt staat tegenwoordig bekend als de Äußere Neustadt, maar de andere koninklijke voorsteden behielden hun naam. Later in de negentiende eeuw werden door de groei van Dresden nabijgelegen dorpen ingelijfd bij de stad. Verscheidene voormalige dorpen hebben hun dorpskern behouden.
In 1958 was het stadsgebied ingedeeld in de stadsdelen Mitte, Ost, West, Süd en Nord. Sinds 1991 is deze indeling vervangen door een nieuwe met tien Ortsamtbereiche (voor het stadsgebied van vóór 1990) en negen Ortschaften (voor de na 1990 toegevoegde gebieden).
