Mariazell & St. Pölten - in beautiful AUSTRIA

Of the myriad of day trip possibilities (or overnight) from Vienna, one of the best is to head into the picturesque Alps and visit the charming mountain shrine town and ski resort of Mariazell. Mariazell is splendidly situated in the eastern Alps of Austria, right across the border of Lower Austria in the province of Steirmark (Styria). It is Central Europe's most revered religious destination for its famous shrine and basilica. Yet it also is a top-notch ski resort in winter. Of course Alpine hiking and biking can be undertaken through much of the year. And there is always local beer and other specialties.
To get there, one travels to the lovely capital city of Lower Austria - St. Pölten - on a choice of trains from Vienna's Westbahnhof. In St. Pölten, one changes to the classic narrow gauge mountain railway called the Mariazellerbahn. This is still a working train route, operating several times daily, every day of the year. The trains are very old and proceed slowly but they carry you through some gorgeous valley and mountain scenery. It is not a tourist train; it's a real train operated by Austrian National Railways.
And if you have time, why not make a stop in St. Pölten. Its maze of pedestrian streets and plazas in the old town, complemented by some striking modern architecture in the government quarter make for a pleasant stroll.
So sit back and breathe in the mountain air while you travel to Mariazell, listening to Josef Haydn's Emperor Quartet. This music by Haydn is a set of variations based on the Imperial Austrian Anthem that he had earlier composed to rally the peoples of the Austrian Empire and to honor the Habsburgs in their heroic battles against the forces of Napoleon. The beautiful town of Stein in Austria
See this beautiful old town along the Danube river near Krems in Austria. Tourist attractions: Kremser Tower built by the year 1470 transformed in Baroque style in the 17th century. Gottweiger hof, an old Abbey complex built in 1286 with a Baroque chapel. Walking all around and enjoy the other old houses and churches.

The meter gauge cogwheel railway takes us to the Schafberg in Upper Austria, whose summit lays in Salzburg. With a length of nearly 3 mi. it gains about 3937.0 ft in height difference with a maximum gradient of 25.5%.
The terminus is located at an altitude 5577.43 ft. At a high visitor frequency two trains drive in a short distance behind each other. The Schafbergbahn is in operation since 1893, the oil-fired steam locomotives ( Z serie ) date from 1992. The original coal-fired locomotives from 1893 are only used for nostalgia journeys.
A wonderful place to see the lakes of the Salzkammergut is below the Schafberg summit at the mountain hut Himmelspforte - Pearly Gates - (5774.28 ft). From here you have a fantastic panorama view over the Attersee, Mondsee and Wolfgangsee .
Besides hiking and sunbathing you can also pass the time watching the paragliders who find here ideal training conditions.

Die meterspurige Zahnradbahn bringt uns auf den Schafberg in Oberösterreich, dessen Gipfel jedoch in Salzburg liegt. Auf einer Länge von knapp 6 km überwindet sie bei einer maximalen Steigung von 25,5% 1.200 Höhenmeter. Die Endstation liegt auf über 1.700 m. Bei regem Touristenandrang fahren zwei Bahnen in kurzem Abstand hintereinander. Sie ist seit 1893 in Betrieb, die ölbefeuerten Dampflokomotiven ( Z Reihe ) stammen aus dem Jahr 1992. Die kohlebefeuerten Originallokomotiven von 1893 werden nur noch für Nostalgiefahrten eingesetzt.
Vom Schutzhaus Himmelspforte (1760 m) unterhalb des Schafberggipfels hat man einen fantastischen Panoramablick über die Seen des Salzkammerguts. Zu sehen sind im wesentlichen Attersee, Mondsee und Wolfgangsee. Neben Wandern und Sonnen kann man sich die Zeit auch beim Beobachten von Gleitschirmspringern verkürzen, die hier ein ideales Übungsgebiet vorfinden.

There is also lots of clothes, shoes, sunglasses, bags and other quirky items for sale. Beautiful flower stalls all over the market add a burst of colour and a wonderful scent as you walk about.
