Guanacaste is a province of Costa Rica located in the northwestern region of the country, along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. It borders Nicaragua to the north, Alajuela Province to the east, and Puntarenas Province to the southeast. It is the most sparsely populated of all the provinces of Costa Rica. The province covers an area of 10,141 km2 and as of 2010, had a population of 354,154.Guanacaste's capital is Liberia. Other important cities include Cañas and Nicoya.

  • 1. Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve Nicoya
    The Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve is a Nature Reserve of Costa Rica, part of the Tempisque Conservation Area in the province of Puntarenas, covering an area of 3,140 acres terrestrial and 4,420 acres marine on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula near Mal Pais. The site is home to the San Miguel Biological Station which was developed to promote and support teaching, research, and environmental education and has facilities that include classrooms, laboratories and a reference library. The reserve was created in 1963 due to a campaign started by Olof Wessberg and was the first major conservation project in the country.

    Barra Honda National Park is a national park in the western part of Costa Rica, which forms part of the Tempisque Conservation Area about 12 km from the Tempisque River. It was created in 1974 to protect its famous cave systems, under the Barra Honda Peak which was formed when islets from the Miocene Era were raised above the plains of the river. The caves and waterways there today were then carved out by the action of rain filtering through the limestone over 70 million years or more. The calcareous formations of the limestone caverns at the Park are the main visitor attraction, which are only estimated to be 50% explored.     The Diria National Park, until 2004 the Diria National Forest Wildlife Refuge, is a National Park of Costa Rica south of Santa Cruz in the Guanacaste Province, and forms part of the Tempisque Conservation Area. It protects both dry and at higher elevations humid tropical forest in the central highlands of the Nicoya Peninsula, including the watersheds of the Diria, Tigre, Verde and Enmedio rivers which have been created a terrain of deep valleys with steep slopes. The 12,000-acre park has a ranger station which is open daily from 8am to 4pm for visitors and tourists, and contains species such as deer, howler monkeys, anteaters and peccary, besides 134 known species of birds.     The Las Baulas National Marine Park, in Spanish Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas is a National Park of Costa Rica, part of the Tempisque Conservation Area, and covers approximately 43.243 acres marine just north of the town of Tamarindo. It supports the largest nesting colony of leatherback sea turtles on the Pacific coast of the Americas.
