The Réserve Africaine is a 300-hectare zoo that opened in 1974 in Sigean, Aude, in the south of France. The zoo is home to some 3,800 animals representing about 160 species, and is a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums .

We road tripped through the southern parts of France enjoying the beautiful Riviera as well as hiking in the alps stunning mountains. On le croirait sorti d'un conte de fée, ou d'un chapitre d'Alice au Pays des Merveilles... le château du Rivau et ses jardins nous ouvrent les portes d'un monde onirique et ludique. Ici, on joue habilement avec les œuvres contemporaines et les inspirations végétales pour faire sourire pareillement petits et grands. Un château avec de la personnalité, donc, qui compte parmi les immanquables du « Jardin de la France ».
(You'd think it had jumped straight out of the pages of a fairytale or Alice in Wonderland...Rivau château and its grounds whisk us away to a fun fantasy world. Kids and adults alike love the play on modern artworks and plant inspirations. A château with character and one of the unmissable Jardin de la France sites.)

Un Jardin français

This place, Le Château de Sceaux, is typical of the great things you can see AROUND Paris. Most are accessible via public transportation. (This place is, by public bus.) You could skip the crowds and cost of Versailles and come here. Le Musée de l'Ile-de-France (the Greater Paris Museum) is inside, the enormous stables can be visited, the orangerie is huge and open after 4 pm, there's a casual outdoor restaurant, and the grounds are just huge. Full of lakes, fountains, woods -- and sweeping views.

The first Sunday of every month, many sites are free in France.

Versailles is actually far from Paris and the commuter train leaves you far from the famous castle. (A city bus from around St-Cloud takes you right there -- be smart and look into this if you must see Versailles.) Versailles is crowded, costly, picnics are forbidden, and you need a full day for the buildings and another full day for the grounds. I worked in Versailles (the city) briefly and did not find it to be a very welcoming place, either. You decide.

In Paris proper, the many museums run by La Ville de Paris are free of charge (if there is a temporary exhibition, you might have to pay to see that, but you can still see the permanent collections for free). Le Musée Carnavalet and Le Musée Cognack-Jay in Le Marais come to mind. I do two channels on YouTube and enjoy posting things about the amazing sights and sounds of France here (and other places I visit -- I was in Turkey fairly recently). Try to spend a long visit here, and remember, there's a lot more to France than just Paris! And don't forget Belgium, a complex and often-overlooked destination!
