I had no expectations before driving down to Kaohsiung. This massive city on the southern tip of Taiwan is a tropical paradise with tons of fun things to do, delicious foods to eat and mingle with its friendly locals. After you watch my video I guarantee you will put Kaohsiung on your bucket list.
Kaohsiung is best known for the Dragon & Tiger pagodas located at the Lotus pond north of downtown, the most facinating thing is the zigzag pathway which is meant to deflect evil. Do make sure to enter through the dragon's mouth first and exit through the tiger's mouth to obtain good fortune. Afterwards, treat yourself to a massive shaved ice dessert at the Ice Bowl located at Binhua 1st Road.
Kick off the next day with a typical southern Taiwanese breakfast at Dandan Hamburger, famous for it delicious soup burger combo. I stayed at the massive 85 Sky Tower hotel on the 61st floor with mesmerizing views of Kaohsiung.
Cijin Island is located in front of Kaohsiung harbor, the largest harbor of Taiwan at which you can rent an electric buggy and cruise along its beautiful boulevard while making selfie stops at the Rainbow Church, giant sea shell and end your adventure with a lunch at the Windmill Station Sushi Restaurant.
At the Windmill Station Restaurant make sure to order the gigantic chirashi bowl of assorted fish with high-grade uni, unagi and tuna. Make sure to top it off with Kaohsiung waffles! On the way back to the Cijin Ferry, make stops at the Cijin dried fish market, Cihou fort for the best skyline view of Kaohsiung and Mazu shrine.
During the evening take the subway to Formosa Boulevard Station to admire world's largest glass art installation consisting of 4500 glass panels.
For night markets check out Ruifeng Night Market located just north of downtown Kaohsiung where you must try the Gua Bao with juicy pork belly, chicken on a stick stuffed with sticky rice and bizarre chocolate chicken for the ultimate night market experience.
To really venture out, go to OLD TAIWAN restaurant which is a themed 1950's Taiwanese restaurant with incredibly local dishes. The dishes truly tasted like they were cooked with love by grandma Taiwan, a great delicious alternative to night markets.
Kaohsiung has a fun and vibrant nightlife, for an epic night out check out bars; Black Dog, an expat bar and Brickyard for their underground dance off parties, foosball tables, pool tables and great local atmosphere. The best nightclubs in town are Muse Kaohsiung and LAMP Disco which often hosts all-you-can-drink parties with a young local crowd. Not much English is spoken at these nightclubs so be aware.
In conclusion, Kaohsiung made it to my Top 5 list of favorite cities in Asia. Most likely due to not having any expectations and being blown away by the tropical climate, delicious local dishes, friendly locals and fantastic parties. Kaohsiung, I shall return in the near future!

Top Travel | Waterwheel in Bo hamlet- a unique structure in Lai Chau

Waterwheels have become a typical feature of Lai Chau province. Bo hamlet in Tam Duong district has the largest number of waterwheels.
Bo hamlet, 35 km from Lai Chau city, is home to Muong, Dao, and Lao ethnic minority people. Due their irrigation demands, local people make waterwheels to get water to their fields and hamlets.
Ethnic minority people in the northwestern region including those in Bo hamlet are the ones who make the most effective, beautiful waterwheels of all sizes.
Water wheels in Bo hamlet are 8 meters high and made of natural materials. It requires efforts and skills to make a waterwheel.
Mr. Lu Van Hung of the Thai ethnic group says that good, water-resistant wood is selected to make the wheel axis and old bamboo trees are used to make blades for the wheel.
The number of blades depends on the size of the wheel, said Hung: “A 5-meter wheel has from 42 to 44 blades. Each blade is 2 meters long. We make holes on the axis to insert the spokes.
The holes must have the same depths so that the spokes are balanced. Then we use rattans to make the outside rim of the wheel. Finally, we fix blades in the outside rim of the wheel.”
Once completed, blades will work as turbine propellers. Water will fall into the blades making the wheels move.
Moving day and night, waterwheels help ease the hard job of the locals. Mr. Hung said: “To get more water, we need dippers. We use big tree knots to make dippers and then fix them in the wheel. The dippers will pour water into gutter after getting water. The gutter, made of old bamboo trees will lead water to our homes and fields.”
Selecting right wood and bamboo to make a waterwheel is very important. It requires experience and skills.
Once completed, each waterwheel is like an architecture embracing cultural features of local ethnic people and reflecting their talent.
Hoang Tho is a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City: “Waterwheels in Bo hamlet top the list of my must-see destinations in the northwest. From afar, they are huge but I have never though it’s too difficult to make them. Coming closer, I really admire the intricacy and talent of the local people. In Bo hamlet, I learn how to make waterwheels and get an interesting experience with the local life: catching fish in streams and cooking Thai food.”
Waterwheels by the Nam Mu river are also meeting places of local boys and girls. Together with Xoe dancing, Xen Muong festival, and new rice festival, waterwheels are the reflection of the culture and soul of north-westerners.

Dar Es Salaam is the largest city in Tanzania, and it's a city that attracts people from around the country. For this reason there's a great variety and mixture of Tanzanian food and restaurants that serve some of the best African food you'll find anywhere in Tanzania. One of the typical home-style restaurants in Dar Es Salaam, actually has no real name, but it's referred to as the Scouts Canteen, probably because it's located on the Boy Scouts of Tanzania campus.
It's kind of a bar, but during lunchtime, Mama Theopiste, as she's known, shows up with pots full of local food that's sure to satisfy. People begin to break for lunch, filling up on huge plates of Tanzanian food. Today I decided to order a fish known as mchuzi wa samaki, which basically translates to a fish curried in coconut milk. Even though we were by the sea, the fish is actually from the province of Mwanza, Tanzania, next to Lake Victoria. The fish, known as a sato fish, is similar to a tilapia. The fish was made into a thick and creamy coconut gravy spiced with spices and tomatoes and onions. I ordered my mchuzi wa samaki along with the staple of East Africa known as ugali. Ugali can be made from a number of different flours, in this case from corn flour, that's cooked with water until it becomes a blob of cornmeal mush. Ugali is the starch and filler of the meal and it's served throughout Tanzania.
I do like ugali, definitely not more than rice, but it does go well with sauce, especially that creamy coconut curry sauce and the fish. The Tanzanian food at Scouts Canteen was pretty delicious, and after chowing down on my lunch, I could barely resist taking a long nap, my stomach full to the brim. In Tanzania, definitely sample mchuzi wa samaki, African fish coconut curry, and you can either eat it with ugali or with rice.
Price - 5,000 TZS ($3) full plate
The Tanzanian food served at Scouts Canteen is a great place for a seriously filling lunch in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, and the food is always prepared fresh by Mama Theopiste - she's friendly and cooks well.
