The Tannenberg Memorial was a monument to the German soldiers of the Battle of Tannenberg , the First Battle of the Masurian Lakes and the medieval Battle of Tannenberg . The victorious German commander, Generalfeldmarschall Paul von Hindenburg, became a national hero, and was later elected Reichspräsident. Dedicated by Hindenburg on the 10th anniversary of the Battle of Tannenberg in 1924 near Hohenstein , the structure, which was financed by donations, was built by the architects Johannes and Walter Krüger of Berlin and completed in 1927. Königstein Fortress , the Saxon Bastille, is a hilltop fortress near Dresden, in Saxon Switzerland, Germany, above the town of Königstein on the left bank of the River Elbe. It is one of the largest hilltop fortifications in Europe and sits atop the table hill of the same name. The 9.5 hectare rock plateau rises 240 metres above the Elbe and has over 50 buildings, some over 400 years old, that bear witness to the military and civilian life in the fortress. The rampart run of the fortress is 1,800 metres long with walls up to 42 metres high and steep sandstone faces. In the centre of the site is a 152.5 metre deep well, which is the deepest in Saxony and second deepest well in Europe. Kiel is a port city on Germany’s Baltic Sea coast. In the old town, the rebuilt, medieval St. Nikolai Church hosts classical concerts. Holstenstrasse and Dänische Strasse are streets lined with shops. Along the Kiel Fjord, the Maritime Museum displays model ships and nautical instruments in a former fish auction hall. Cruise ships dock at the Ostseekai Terminal in Germania Harbor.

Some locals admit that Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, has a city centre that's grottenhässlich (ugly as sin). And unfortunately it is true; it was obliterated during WWII by bombing raids on its U-boat pens and then rapidly rebuilt. Today, it is a series of charmless indoor malls linked by pedestrian bridges. However, Kiel's grand harbour continues on as it has for centuries and this, along with the city's museums, should be the focus of your visit. Huge ferries transport millions of passengers to and from Scandinavia, while summer sees locals strolling the long waterfront promenade.

Kiel is a maritime city and has been for a long time, it remains one of Germany main passenger ports (besides Travemünde and Rostock) and as the Baltic endpoint of the Kiel Canal plays an important role in shipping. The beginning of the end of German monarchism happened here when in 1918 the admirals wanted the fleet to sail out for one last glorious but militarily pointless battle and the sailors told their superiors where they could shove that idea, ultimately culminating in revolution and the formation of Soviets.

During the Second World War, Kiel was severely bombed, because of its submarine-producing shipyard. Both civil and military ships are being built in Kiel nowadays and the tall cranes dominate the eastern shore of the Förde (fjord).

The bombing destroyed almost all historic buildings in Kiel; even the older looking buildings were built after WW2. So, if you come to the Kieler Schloss (Kieler Castle) don't be disappointed. There isn't much left of the original building. During the rebuilding after WW2, mostly modern architecture was used.

Darmstadt is a city near Frankfurt in southwest Germany. It’s known for the Mathildenhöhe district's art nouveau buildings, like the iconic Wedding Tower. Museum Künstlerkolonie features art nouveau glass, textiles and jewelry. Hessisches Landesmuseum displays art by Joseph Beuys. Northeast, the Messel Pit has Eocene-era fossils. To the south is ruined Frankenstein Castle, which may have inspired the famed book.

Beautiful Jugendstil (art nouveau) architecture and excellent museums are the biggest draws of this strollable city 35km south of Frankfurt. Famed for its technical university, Darmstadt is a designated Wissenschaftsstadt (City of Science). The super-heavy element Darmstadtium was first created at Darmstadt's GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research) in 1994. The city’s glass-and-stone conference centre is also called the Darmstadtium.

In 2017, Darmstadt won Germany’s first ever Digital City award for its investment in a sustainable digital future; already, the power supply for the entire tram network has been converted to 100% green electricity. The surrounding area has some fascinating sights, including the Unesco-listed archaeological site Grube Messel, and fabled castle Burg Frankenstein.

Prior to World War I, Darmstadt was the capital of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. The Grand Dukes used to live in what is now the Schloss Marktplatz. It is also the birthplace of the last Empress of Russia, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna Romanova, who was born Prinzessin Victoria Alix Helena Louise Beatrice von Hessen und bei Rhein. Sadly, much of the old town was destroyed in carpet bombing by the Allies during World War II, and most of what is still standing was reconstructed after the war. Darmstadt also lost its status as the capital of Hesse after the war, the honour now lying with the nearby city of Wiesbaden.

The popular recreational drug Ecstasy was first synthesised in Darmstadt in 1912 by a chemist known as Anton Kollisch while he was working for the pharmaceutical company Merck. The element Darmstadtium, element 110 on the Periodic Table, is named after the city. Perhaps as many as 11 atoms of this short half-life element have been synthesized to date.
