20060906 From Malang via Bromo volcano to Margo Utomo in Kalibaru (Indonesia)
The video starts with the map of east Java showing in particular the volcano area near Malang of which Bromo is one of the volcanoes.
In Malang we have set off in the dead of night at 01:00 a.m. Are collected by our guide and driver Sol who is somewhat delayed. Amazing all those police stations along our route in the urban areas, about one mile between them. They're very recognizable because of the blue flickering police sign on top of the roofs.
It takes four hours to get from Malang to the Bromo area (2,392 meters above sea level) and it is pitch dark out there.
The area appears to be so cold that we gladly accept the offer of hire jackets. In a souvenir shop woollen caps are on display. Sol buys one which carries the name of a well known Austrian ski resort.
We light our path with a flashlight and with mobile telephones and discover more tourists and young lads clad in sarongs over their trousers which hamper them in progressing. One of them seems to walk at random in the dark and suddenly falls from concrete stairs. Only the flashes of cameras show that the crowd of visitors is building up.
On a sleep of the volcano a ceremonial bonfire is lit in the course between mountain top and the east where the sun will rise. The sunset is fantastic!
Shortly after we walk to the sand sea where horses can be hired to ride to the rim of the volcano. That is to say: up to the lowest stair of a long steep ladder on which people ascend and descend. Some are holding a shawl or cloth against their mouths and noses because of passing sulphur fumes from the volcano. A few people vomit while other people seem not to care about the fumes.
Nelleke, my wife, appears to belong to the first group. I can stand the fumes, recognizing the phenomenon from a former volcano visit in Central America. On the rim we are hawked by salesmen and begging children. They all have more Mongol features than most Indonesians in the valley. The ancestors of this people used to live in the valleys up to the moment that Muslims invaded Java and started their conversion activities.
When we continue our route by car, driving over the sand sea appears to require special skill. In other words: in no time our small tourist bus gets stuck in sand and dust. Sol's efforts to get out of it results in getting more stuck in the dust and sand... A local jeep comes to help and draws our bus loose in a whim. The jeep owner makes a daily business of helping tourist buses here.
We carry on but not for long. Again our bus ends to its axes in sand and volcanic dust... Now a local youngster on foot dressed in sportive gear armed with a spade shows up. He removes some sand in front of the tires, then sits down behind the steering wheel and carefully drives the car out of the sand. So carefully that the engine stops, but he tries again, avoiding the wheels to spin, and steers the car to a harder surface in the sand sea. He advises Sol how to drive. We have to take an upward slope from which lots of cars of ceremony participants descend, hampering our bus. But fortunately Sol successfully drives the bus out of the sand sea.
On top of the road we stop at a café where Sol orders local delicacies like for instance a mug of lychees and ice cubes. This establishment appears to be not touristic in spite of the lots of tourists who call on.
While Sol drives on we take a nap and eventually get in the Banyuwangi province of Java and stop at a tabacco plantation. Further on we stop at a tinsmith's where all products are being made with help of hand tools. Beautifully done!
Eventually we get in Margo Utomo Resort in Kalibaru which appears to be a beautiful place away from the road network.
After having checked in at the reception we start to explore the beautiful resort. The music in this last part of the video is typical for Banyuwangi. Enjoy it together with the floral pics.

Top 10 Attractions in Shanghai! #5 Maglev Train
Joy Ride on the Shanghai Maglev Train
The Shanghai Maglev Train runs between the Pudong International Airport and the Longyang Road Station on the outskirts of Shanghai city where you can connect to the metro subway and the bus networks.
This is an exhilarating ride on magnetic levitation at speeds between 300 to 430 kmph depending on time of day. Gliding on air, you might be tempted to close your eyes in repose, but you’ll be wasting a chance to catch some high-speed sightseeing out of town.
This video covers a ride from the city to the airport.
