North Queensland or the Northern Region is the northern part of the state of Queensland in Australia that lies just south of Far North Queensland. Queensland is a massive state, larger than many countries, and the tropical northern part of it has been historically remote and undeveloped, resulting in a distinctive regional character and identity.
Townsville is the largest urban centre in North Queensland, leading it to be regarded as an unofficial capital[citation needed]. The region has a population of 231,628 and covers 80,041.5 km².[1]
There is no official boundary that separates North Queensland from the rest of the state. Unofficially it is usually considered to have a southern border beginning south of the Mackay Region southern boundary, but historically it has been as far south as Rockhampton. To the north is the Far North Queensland region, centred around Cairns and out west is the Gulf Country.
A coastal region centred around its largest settlement is the city of Townsville. The city is the location of a major seaport handling exports from mines in Mount Isa and cattle exports from coastal and inland areas. The region also contains a bulk sugar exporting terminal at Lucinda in the region's north. Mackay is Australia's sugar capital and produces the most sugar in Australia and is shipped at Mackay Harbour. Mackay is also one of Australia's biggest coal exporters as it is close to Queensland's major mines. Dalrymple Bay, south of Mackay is another port where coal and sugar is exported. It also contains the inland city of Charters Towers and the coastal towns of Ayr and Ingham.
Other Communities in North Queensland include Home Hill, Sarina, Bowen, Airlie Beach and Proserpine.
Throughout the years, there have been many calls for the formation of a new state. Many proposals have been drawn up, regarding the borders, name and the debate over which city will become the capital.[2]

Zoe Bay HINCHINBROOK ISLAND
Hinchinbrook Island has some of the most dramatic coastlines in all of Queensland. We share how to get to Hinchinbrook Island including Zoe Bay, the Thorsborne Trail and Zoe Falls.
Anchoring in Zoe Bay is like right out of a scene from Jurassic Park, with towering mountain peaks rising 1000m up from the sea. The gem of Zoe Bay is a trek at the southern end of the beach that winds through the rainforest to the majestic Zoe Falls. There's so much to see and explore....
Hinchinbrook is one of Australia’s largest island National Parks and is home to many large animals such as dolphins, turtles, dugongs and crocodiles.
If you want to visit Hinchinbrook, you'll need your own boat or take the ferry service that drops off hikers for Thorsborne Trail, a 32km trek that traverses the island.
Come along for the ride as we show this remote, wild island paradise...
Cheers,
Jam and Andman

Journey with Jenney - Extreme Adventures New Zealand
This video is a recap of my 2009 Spring Break That's What a Sheep Is For Trip to the South Island of New Zealand with Extreme Adventures, a travel company from Australia.
Checking out their website ( they may only cater to college students but I just wanted to share about my amazing spring break trip to New Zealand when I was studying abroad at UNSW in Australia.
Yes, it was expensive--it was $1845 AUD, which is roughly $1350 USD but as a solo traveler, it was worth it for me to get a chance to explore New Zealand in a way I could never had by myself, plus I had the bonus of meeting 49 other amazing students (mostly American) but some international, and met some amazing people who I still keep in touch with today.
The tour was called So That's What A Sheep Is For! and it included 9 days and 10 nights in the South Island of New Zealand. When I added up everything that was included, honestly, it still is a good deal considering how expensive many of these activities are!
It included all accommodations, in hostels and lodges, all the transportation, a tour guide, over half the meals. The trip started off with a glacier hike up Fox Glacier, which went through a rain forest first and then up the glacier. Then we stopped by beautiful lake Wanaka, and in general, there were a lot of stops for beautiful photos. If you can't tell already, New Zealand has amazing scenery.
Then, we went to Queenstown, arguably the adventure capital of the world, where we stayed for 4 days. Every day, it was seriously extreme adventure, with jetting through the Shotover River Gorges in the Shotover Jet, missing rock walls by centimeters traveling at around 100km/hour; jumping into a helicopter to the top of the canyon and then white-water rafting out of the canyon! That was so fun! We also jumped off the Nevis Bungy jump over the Nevis River, a 134m drop; took a gondola to the top of Queenstown and rode the luges down the track. We went river boarding where I thought I was literally going to die when people tried grabbing onto me to save themselves. And then every night, we went out drinking and partying until 4AM in the morning, and repeated this crazy adventure.
Following that, we took a boat cruise along the magnificent Milford Sound, surrounded by mountains and waterfalls. Then a visit to Te Anau for their glow worm caves. And finally, to end it all, a visit to a genuine sheep farm, where we enjoyed learning about sheep shearing and sheep dogs, and enjoyed a delicious home cooked meal of the best lamb I'd ever had.
So whether you find a tour, or you decide to piecemeal a trip on your own, I highly recommend visiting New Zealand and especially the South Island! It's a country that has a very fond place in my heart.
Cheers,
Jenney

German Food - trying Schnitzel and desserts in HAMBURG
Even though schnitzel might not be quite German, it's still a popular thing to eat in most German cities. This lightly breaded and fried pork or veal patty is topped off with cheese and consumed with potatoes. I also followed with some salted raw herring that was quite horrible. The two other desserts were wonderful, especially in Hamburg's breezy sea air. I actually preferred Hamburg over Berlin because I really enjoyed the port area.
