Torres Strait Islands, Australia
The Torres Strait Islands are a group of islands to the north of the Australian mainland stretching nearly as far as Papua New Guinea. There are 14 inhabited islands, but only the two neighbouring islands of Thursday Island and Horn Island have developed visitor facilities. These two islands are the most visited, and have regular scheduled air and ferry connections. The other islands are left to the more intrepid voyager or those with business with the indigenous communities. Scheduled light aircraft, helicopter, water-taxis, barges and private boats allow access to all this inhabited islands, or even the possibility of spending a day or night on an entirely uninhabited island.
The Torres Strait Islanders were the first Indigenous Australians to gain legal recognition of their ownership of the land. Traditionally they were fierce headhunters until the arrival of the missionaries (celebrated yearly throughout the Islands on July 1st as The Coming of the Light.) Due to the missionary influence, Islanders are often very generous and keen to share their culture.
Most residents of the islands are still Indigenous Australians (with the ratio of around 6 to 1). Many of the non-indigenous residents are temporary, employed in education and health, policing and military, and overseas workers in hospitality.
Thursday Island is the main administrative centre, with a population of around 4000 people on an island only 3.5 square kilometres. It has a permanently manned military barracks. Neighbouring Horn Island has the main airport, with air links to Cairns and light aircraft links to several other inhabited islands. It has a smaller population of around 600, but a much larger land mass of 60 square kilometres. Most residents of Horn commute to Thursday for work and education, and there is a regular ferry service between the two.
The fishing is absolutely amazing in the crystal clear waters of the Torres Strait. Although quarantine regulations control what can be taken back to mainland Australia, freshly caught fish in ice boxes are permitted. Snorkelling on the reefs is pretty good too, but caution is required as some reefs house sharks and crocodiles.

BOL Croatia. Brac is Amazing Is this REAL LIFE?

Bol is situated on the southern part of the island Brac, and is the oldest town on the coast of Brac. This little town was founded long ago and became an extraordinary tourist oasis because of the wide gravel and sandy beaches which expands over 10 km and the sources of drinking water. It is not possible to avoid the Zlatni rat, certainly the most beautiful beach on the Adriatic sea, whose cape is turning one moment to one side and the other moment to the other side playing a strange game with the wind and the waves.
Above Bol is rising the coronet of Bols hills, the illlyrian fortress Kostilo (660 m) and the Vidova gora (778 m), the highest top of the Adriatic islands. Bol is only 15 km away from the international tourist and sports airport Brac, and excellent connected with the fast lines to the coast, but also with a ferry- line from Supetar.
Bol actually has a lot to offer to everyone. You can relax at the beach and get some tan, or you can be active as much as you like. Outdoor activities in Bol include hiking, scuba diving, windsurfing, kite surfing, quad rides, sightseeing (museums, galleries, traditional architecture), para-sailing, banana and tube rides, water skiing, free climbing and much more.
Bol also offer wide variety of restaurants and bars for you to choose from. Most restaurants offer local and Mediterranean specialties, most popular being ‘Lamb on a spit’ and ‘Octopus under Peka’. If you like trying different food you should definitely try ‘Vitalac’ which is a dish authentic to island Brac.
Bol has a lot to offer accommodation wise. First of all, there are four large hotels, many small family owned hotels and also vast selection of private self-catering apartments in Bol for you to choose from. Hotels in Bol offer all inclusive or half board service, with two hotels offering many activities, animation and wellness centers. Bluesun hotel Elaphusa has huge wellness that covers 3000 square meters and all the water inside is sea water (swimming pool, three Jacuzzi and treatment baths). Four major hotels in Bol ( Three Bluesun hotels: Elaphusa 4*, Borak 3* and Bonaca 3* all inclusive family hotel, and Hotel Bretanide 3* all inclusive) are located half way from Bol center to Zlatni rat beach, by the promenade, all close to the sea. Most hotels have minimum stay of 3+ nights, but you can also stay one to three nights with extra payment of 30% daily rate.

Ep.164 At the Top of Australia
We reached the top of Australia, Cape York! Due to the weather we couldnt get to the cape so we had to settle with the view from York Island. A bit of a disappointment for not stepping on cape york but we coudnt do anything about it!
Next stop, hello Thursday Island! We arrived on the Mabo Day Parade, a day where the Islanders celebrate Eddie Mabo and
what he did for Aboriginal land rights. There was a day full of pride and joy among the locals. As you wander throughout the Island there's an immediate strong religious feeling, especially on the main street where you will find several church's. But the crew were eager to climb up Green Hill to check out the key military sights including the trenches, a concrete bunker and the remains of a crashed US plane . From the top of Green Hill you get uninterrupted, spectacular views of the neighbouring islands, including Horn Island. To get into the amazing history of the Island, Thursday Island Cemetery shows its multicultural past in its full glory. Thursday Island was also the port of departure for my great friend Gonzo, from now on only with the girls.
Give it thumbs a up if you liked this episode!

I am an Australian guy trying to live on a small footprint. I take in crew wherever I go and go where the wind takes me. I catch and gather food wherever I can.
I have no fridge or freezer, no oven, no aircon, no generator, no water heater, no watermaker ...
So if you want to see some interesting places and some interesting crew then follow me.

Zlatni Rat Beach and Bol on the Island of Brač, Croatia
When you think of the best beaches in Croatia, Zlatni Rat near Bol on the island of Brač is one that is on almost everyone's list. Also known as the Golden Horn or the Golden Cape, the sandbar extends from the island into the Hvar Channel. Surrounded by incredibly stunning water and landscapes, it truly may be one of Croatia's best beaches.
The area of Bol itself is also quite a nice place to include in your Croatian Itinerary. Even though we spent 3 months in Croatia, we only had a few days on Brač and chose to have a relaxing time just enjoying Bol and Zlatni Rat beach. Next time we are in Croatia we would love to explore Brač more. It seems like the whole island would be amazing.
If you are heading to Croatia, take a look at all our articles, videos, maps and printables on our blog.
