Top 10 Things to Do in Cairns, Australia | Best Activities in Tropical North Queensland
What are the top 10 things to do in Cairns? What to do in Cairns? We answer these questions for you in this video! We show you the best things to do in Cairns! If you do any of the activities mentioned, make sure to comment below!
Here are the Top 10 Best Things to do from Cairns!
1. Walk on Cape Tribulation: This can be done via tour or you can rent a car and drive yourself (winding roads though). Make sure that you do NOT swim in the water during the summer months due to deadly box jellyfish, check online to see when it is safe to swim.
2. The curtain fig tree is a beautiful stop along the road and only about a two minute walk to get there from parking. For more information on how to get there and where it is located visit the link:
3. Snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef is a well known must do in Cairns! There are many different companies that will take you out to the reef, but after plenty of research we decided on Reef Experience because they included everything, including an introductory scuba dive (most companies charge big $$ for that) and a delicious lunch! They also go to two different reef locations which gives you an opportunity to see different types of corals and fishes! Check out their website for more information!
4. Paronella Park is a beautiful place but just watch out for the mosquitoes!! There is a inspiring and sad story about a dream then a tragedy of this place, if you want to find out more check out the website.
5. The Daintree Rainforest is the oldest living rainforest in the WORLD! Again watch out for those mosquitoes! There is lots of unique wildlife there! We were able to see a rare insect, a large spider, green ants, a dragon, and lots of flora and fauna. We did miss out on seeing a causeway though.
6. Scuba diving for the first time in the Great Barrier Reef was a mesmerizing experience! For more experienced scuba divers you may want to consider a scuba diving specialty boat (although snorkeling was amazing as well), but for those first time divers a great way to see the reef is through an introductory dive! Reef Experience made us both feel comfortable and didn’t pressure us to do anything. Highly recommend!
7. Millaa Millaa falls was extra strong while we were there due to the large rainfalls. You can swim at the falls but be aware of the the murky water at times and the strength of the waterfall. For information on Millaa Millaa and other falls check here:
8. Swim in a fresh clear creek! Apparently these are everywhere, all you have to do is venture one road away from the main highway (not sure which highway, but we were driving to the fig tree and Paronella Park that day)! These may not be easy to find but it is well worth the adventure if you do, thankfully our tour guide showed us the way!
9. Take a cruise along the Daintree River! We were able to see lots of crocodiles, including a very large one, a mama one (the one in the video), and lots of babies! There was also fish and many unique plants!
10. Watch the bats come out at dusk and fly over the city! This was such a crazy experience to see the sunset and watch as a clear sky was filled with thousands of bats flying overhead. They are only in certain locations in Cairns, but if you are in the CBD you will likely see them!

Cairns Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
Cairns is a small port city, yet what it may lack in size it makes up for with its access to a bounty of natural beauty. In fact, Cairns is considered a gateway to tropical North Queensland. This eastern Australia city is where the rainforest meets the reef, with Daintree Rainforest to the north and the Great Barrier Reef to the east.
Start your day in Cairns by visiting some of the open parkland in the city center or going for a short swim in the man-made lagoon. Rent a bike on the promenade or hit the waves at Trinity Beach if you want to experience some Aussie surfing.
After a morning of activity, you might be ready to slow things down. A trip on the Skyrail® Rainforest Cableway is Cairns sightseeing at its best. The cable car will take you over the canopy of tropical rainforest and waterfalls. The last stop on this breathtaking 90-minute ride is Kuranda, a small mountain village where you can do a bit of shopping before heading back down to Cairns. The rail also takes passengers to Smithfield, which is less than one hour from Port Douglas, an excellent destination for upscale shopping and dining.
After your spectacular rail ride, consider checking out some of the Cairns tourism that puts you up close and personal with some of Australia’s more… dangerous wildlife. Hartleys Crocodile Adventures lets you immerse yourself in the daily life of a croc by taking a boat ride through a swamp-like habitat where several of the reptiles live.
If softer animals are more up your alley, fear not. Cairns tours should always include a stop to the Cairns Tropical Zoo, where you can make some kangaroo and koala friends.

We stopped in to check out the some of the great natural experiences that can be enjoyed in Tropical North Queensland. We started in Cairns and went out for a trip to the Great Barrier Reef.
We sailed out to the reef to Michaelmas Cay with Passions of paradise. The great thing about this location is that you can snorkel right of the beach and if you are a certified diver you can also scuba dive this location.
We then decided to head north to check out the Daintree Rainforest. To get to the Daintree head towards Port Douglas. On your way to the Daintree be sure to check out Mossman Gorge, if its a hot day its a great place to go for a swim.
When you get to the Daintree there are many great walking tracks. As you adventure out along these tracks there are many different experiences that will enjoy and if you are lucky enough you may even see a Cassowary in the wild.
The Atherton Tablelands offers a range of things to do and see. Some of the places to visit are the crater lakes of lake Eacham and Barrine through to the Curtain Fig a must see. Heading further into the Great Dividing range you visit Mount Mulligan.
Exploring the Atherton Tablelands
No need to pay for those expensive Atherton Tablelands Day Tours, pick the Self-drive option instead! It is so easy and so much fun. Take a long or as little time as you need and stop off at all the destinations that you want to see.
We stopped off at Lake Barrine, Lake Eacham, drove through Yungaburra, stopped at the Curtain fig tree, drove through Atherton and stopped off at Kuranda.
