Mexico Travel : Magic Towns Series : Episode 1 Mascota
Clear Travel is currently traveling around Mexico. In our Mexico Travel segment we will be visiting Magic Towns located throughout Mexico.
What are Magic Towns?
Mexico is best known to the outside world for its posh beach resorts. However, in 2001, the Mexico Tourism Board created the Magical Towns Program, an initiative which promotes a series of towns across Mexico due to their history, rich culture, unique traditions, and natural beauty. As of August 2018 there are currently 111 towns bearing the “Magical Towns,” or “Pueblos Mágicos” designation. According to Smithsonian.com “To qualify, a city must demonstrate a mix of historical, cultural and aesthetic qualities. Each city has aspects that set it apart from others in the country, including folklore and legends or historical events and a unique everyday life. It must also be well preserved, retaining its heritage-based value both tangibly and intangibly.”
This week we are visiting the Magic Town of Mascota. Mascota is a town located in the Mexican State of Jalisco and it is a two hour drive from Puerto Vallarta.

One of the places I was most excited to visit in Mexico for food (Comida Oaxaqueña) is Oaxaca. Oaxaca has one of the most developed and advanced food cultures in all of Mexico. For our first day, we set out on a Mexican street food tour of Oaxaca, eating everything we could see.
Mercado de Abastos - We began the morning at one of the biggest local fresh food markets in Oaxaca. I samples a Tamal de Mole - 11 MXN ($0.59) and a hot Chocolate - 10 MXN ($0.53), both of which were delicious, and a great way to start this tour.
Soup - 30 MXN ($1.60) per bowl - The market was just opening, but there was a busy soup stall, so we stopped to have a bowl. The fish and shrimp soup were both delicious.
Memelas - 30 MXN ($1.60) total - One of the ultimate Mexican street foods to try in Oaxaca is memalas, a round of masa, cooked and topped with salsa and cheese, and your choice of other toppings. We got it with grilled meat on top. It was delicious, one of the best things I ate throughout the day.
Carnitas - 30 MXN ($1.60) total - This was just a quick impulse taco on the go because it looked so good… it was.
Zócalo Oaxaca, Plaza de Santo Domingo - The center of Oaxaca is a pleasant place to hang out, only today there happen to be a protest going on, so it was a bit busy.
Mercado 20 de Noviembre - Meat combo - 300 MXN ($16.02) - This is one of the great meat halls of the world. You walk in to the meat sauna, choose your meat, they grill it all in front of you, and you eat it with tortillas and salsa. An amazing food paradise.
Tlayudas El Negro - Tlayudas are another common Oaxacan street food, using giant tortillas filled with beans, cabbage, and cheese, and then grilled.
Price - 80 MXN ($4.27) for 1
Monte Albán - Resting our stomachs, we did a little sightseeing in Oaxaca. One of the famous attractions are the ruins of Monte Alban.
Elote - 20 MXN ($1.07) - You’ll find elotes, a corn on the cobb with cheese and salsas, all over Mexico. It’s one of the most common Mexican street foods… but this guy is at the main plaza of Oaxaca is on another level. His style is champion!
Mole negro - 60 MXN ($3.20) per plate - Finally to end this Mexican street food tour of Oaxaca, we needed to have a plate of mole negro, one of the national dishes of Oaxaca.
It was an amazing day of food. Oaxaca has such a rich culture of food and friendly people.

Trip to Sierra Lago Resort
This is the last of the video for my vacation in Mexico. Sadly I was not fully into videography at that time. I'm not sponsored by Sierra Lago Resort but we loved the resort. We did an all inclusive 3 days 2 night and it was super nice and a great getaway from your everyday life. The resort is on top of a mountain and there is a lake and great views. There is a lot of activities you can do like horseback riding, spa, canoeing, etc.
The best thing was at night for all you stargazers. You can see all the stars because there is not light pollution.

Top Mexican Colonial Towns
As a center of Spain’s colonial power and wealth in the Americas for centuries, Mexico has many stunning historical cities. With well-preserved architecture, and narrow cobble stoned streets, you feel as if you’re stepping back in time here.
From soaring cathedrals with impressive bell towers, some built with stones from Mayan or Aztec temples, to grand civic buildings and grand plazas, the grandeur of this once colonial power is eloquently displayed.

**EDWARD JAMES GARDEN INFO (WIKIPEDIA**
Las Pozas (the Pools/the Wells) is a surrealistic group of structures created by Edward James, more than 2,000 feet (610 m) above sea level, in a subtropical rainforest in the mountains of Mexico. It includes more than 80 acres (32 ha) of natural waterfalls and pools interlaced with towering surrealist sculptures in concrete.
Las Pozas is near the village of Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, a seven-hour drive north of Mexico City. In the early 1940s, James went to Los Angeles, California, and then decided that he wanted a Garden of Eden set up . . . and I saw that Mexico was far more romantic and had far more room than there is in crowded Southern California. In Hollywood in 1941, his lifetime friend and cousin, Magic Realist painter Bridget Bate Tichenor, encouraged him to search for a surreal location in Mexico to express his diverse esoteric interests. In Cuernavaca, he hired Plutarco Gastelum as a guide. They came to know Xilitla in November 1945. Eventually, Plutarco got married and had four children. James was Uncle Edward to the children and frequently stayed with them in a house Plutarco had built, a mock-Gothic cement castle, now a hotel – La Posada El Castillo.
Between 1949 and 1984, James built scores of surreal concrete structures which carry the names The House on Three Floors Which Will in Fact Have Five or Four or Six, The House with a Roof like a Whale, and The Staircase to Heaven. There were also plantings and beds full of tropical plants, including orchids — there were, apparently, 29,000 at Las Pozas at one time — and a variety of small homes, niches, and pens that held exotic birds and wild animals from the world over—James owned many exotic animals and once even took his pet boa constrictors to the Hotel Francis in Mexico City.
Massive sculptures up to four stories tall punctuate the site. The many trails throughout the garden site are composed of steps, ramps, bridges and narrow, winding walkways that traverse the valley walls. Construction of Las Pozas cost more than $5 million. To pay for it, James sold his collection of surrealistic art at an auction.
